BancFirst Grants $400,000 to Aid Affordable Housing for Native Americans in Okemah

In a significant step towards addressing housing challenges faced by Native Americans, BancFirst has awarded $400,000 in funding to the Muscogee Creek Nation. This financial support is part of the FHLBank Topeka's Native American Housing Initiatives (NAHI) Grants Program, aimed at facilitating affordable housing development.

The Muscogee Creek Nation is among 16 organizations that were selected to receive this funding in 2025. BancFirst, a prominent member of FHLBank Topeka, expressed immense pride in collaborating with the Muscogee Nation to secure these vital resources. Brandon Burnett, the President of BancFirst Okemah, highlighted the importance of this partnership in fostering better living conditions for citizens in Okemah and surrounding areas.

The grant will primarily support the development of a 60-unit rental project designed for low-income tenants who earn at or below 60% of the area’s median income. This initiative aims not only to provide homes but also to alleviate the chronic housing crisis faced by the tribe.

Ronnie Rogers, Secretary of Housing for the Muscogee Creek Nation, underlined the dire need for such projects, noting that the reservation has historically suffered due to isolation, severe disinvestment, and the lingering effects of previous traumas. With over 500 families on the waiting list for rental and lease-to-own programs, Rogers emphasized that the new funding will significantly impact those who desperately need housing solutions.

The FHLBank Topeka had initially set out to distribute $3.6 million in grants for 2025 but decided to increase the allocation to a historic $5 million in response to the overwhelming interest and need for these initiatives. Jeff Kuzbel, President and CEO of FHLBank Topeka, stated, "The strength and vision reflected in the proposals from tribal nations made it clear that expanding our support was necessary. We've confirmed that our NAHI Program is impactful and essential for the communities it serves."
