Okayama University Launches Graduate Support Program for Enhanced Staff Development

Okayama University's Graduate Support Program: A Pathway for Staff Education



On March 27, 2026, Okayama University, under the leadership of President Yasuyuki Nasu, celebrated the certification ceremony for its Graduate Support Program at the Tsushima campus's main building. This initiative supports university staff in their pursuit of graduate degrees, aligning with the university's long-term vision for 2050 to foster regional and global innovation.

The Graduate Support Program is part of the Ministry of Education’s J-PEAKS initiative, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Japan's core research universities. This year marks the fourth iteration of this program, which has now expanded its eligibility criteria. Not only education-focused technical staff but also administrative staff, facility management personnel, and librarians can apply. Candidates can aspire to pursue both Master's and Doctoral degrees.

During this event, the president awarded certificates to six qualified staff members, including three administrative and three educational research technicians, who will embark on their graduate studies in the upcoming term. The program has shown significant interest from employees, indicating a strong desire for professional advancement.

At the opening of the ceremony, Vice President Yoshihito Sato emphasized, “This unique program is designed to support the advancement of administrative and technical staff at Okayama University towards obtaining Master's or Doctoral degrees. From the second semester of 2024, successful candidates will have their entrance fees and standard tuition fees fully covered by the university.” He explained that this initiative contributes to equipping Japan's research universities with a highly skilled workforce.

President Nasu characterized the six recipients as ambitious individuals eager to deepen their expertise through graduate studies. He highlighted the importance of having staff in universities with advanced knowledge akin to their academic counterparts, fostering a collaborative environment. He urged the participants to embrace the responsibility of their educational endeavors, aiming for future roles in university management and development.

The certified individuals shared their gratitude and aspirations, expressing their commitment to enhance their management skills and contribute to the university's internationalization efforts. For instance, Yusuke Nii, from the International Planning Section, aims to elevate his expertise to facilitate further development at Okayama University through his graduate learnings. Similarly, Takao Funakura, from the Industry-Academia Collaboration Division, intends to conduct extensive research on promoting well-being in the region.

As a strategic commitment to fostering a more inclusive growth environment, Okayama University is pursuing a transformation in governance away from a traditional faculty-centered model. By setting a target of 50% for Master's degree attainment and 20% for Doctorates among educational research technicians, the university is paving the way for a more empowered and qualified staff.

In response to these changes, the university aims to elevate roles previously occupied predominantly by faculty into capable managers drawn from a broader pool of applicants. Nasu stated, “We need to redefine what is considered normal in university management. I encourage our staff to challenge the status quo, and we will diligently support their ambitions.”

Okayama University, with its Graduate Support Program and ongoing initiatives, is positioned as a core institution for research, innovation, and community engagement. The institution is committed to building a sustainable future while aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and continually awaits further developments from its dedicated and aspiring staff.

As of 2026, a total of 13 individuals (eight pursuing Doctorates and five for Master’s) have been certified under this program since its inception, reflecting a growing commitment to higher education and skill enhancement across the university.

This initiative reinforces Okayama University’s mission of becoming a leading contributor to the global research and innovation landscape, ensuring that its staff are not just competent but are exemplary in their respective fields as well.
