The Vision of Soukyu Co., Ltd.: A Retreat Nation from Japan
In the heart of Japan, the sacred land of hot springs in Gunma Prefecture holds a dream—transforming the country into a retreat destination for people worldwide. Soukyu Co., Ltd. is committed to this vision, moving beyond the simple pleasure of sauna bathing to achieve deep recovery and well-being.
The Experience of "Totonotta"
When individuals emerge from a cold bath and settle into a chair, a serene transition begins. Their minds quiet, and the boundaries of their surroundings soften. The sensation is difficult to define—are they becoming heavier or lighter? It is a feeling of being both present and transported elsewhere, known as "totonotta". This deep sense of floating has drawn countless individuals to the sauna culture, and we at Soukyu wholeheartedly embrace this growing movement. However, this is merely the starting point.
More Than Just a Sensation
The fleeting pleasure of relaxation is not the same as true recovery. The saunas designed and manufactured by Soukyu Co., Ltd. aim for something deeper than just a momentary feeling of comfort. They facilitate cellular-level repair, immune system regulation, skin rejuvenation, and the elimination of fatigue—true recovery lies in these profound effects. Our focus extends beyond "totonotta"; we delve into the essence of revitalization itself.
Innovative Sauna Design
Imagine a sauna with 360-degree radiant heat from walls and floors, designed to elevate deep body temperatures through rock baths, allowing both physical and mental rejuvenation.
In Finland, known for its sauna tradition with over 3 million saunas for a population of around 5.5 million, this practice is more than mere entertainment—it's a part of daily life, serving as a space for healing and connection for centuries. Recognized as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020, Finnish sauna culture emphasizes the need for profound recovery rather than just pleasant experiences.
At Soukyu, we strive to scientifically validate this understanding using Japanese technology and research.
Data-Driven Recovery
Our innovative saunas are currently under patent application while structural designs have been registered. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air, our design utilizes structural materials as heat mediums. Joint research with Maebashi Institute of Technology will allow us to examine thermal environments—radiant heat, humidity, black globe temperature, and perceived temperature. Collaborating with medical experts, we will scientifically explore the sauna's influence on human health, including improvements in blood circulation, autonomic nervous functions, immune system strength, and skin regeneration.
Our goal transcends subjective enjoyment. We aim to provide data-driven validation of health recovery, rejuvenation, and recovery, something currently lacking in Japanese saunas.
Revitalizing Sauna Culture in Gunma
Gunma boasts several renowned hot spring areas, including Kusatsu and Ikaho, that once served as healing locations rather than mere retreats. Historically, "yuujin" (the practice of visiting hot springs for healing) was integral to Japanese culture, establishing hot springs as places of recovery rather than mere relaxation.
The essence of sauna should mirror this historic purpose. Japan is equipped with a unique combination of assets—hot springs, saunas, rock baths, natural beauty across seasons, rich fermentation culture, and diverse cuisine. What is needed is the cohesive intent and design to present these elements as a culture of recovery to the world.
A Future of International Wellness
Just as Japanese cuisine became a globally celebrated culinary art form, we believe that a unique Japanese wellness culture, encompassing hot springs, saunas, and rock baths, will one day achieve international recognition similar to Finland’s sauna tradition. We envision a future where people around the globe travel to Japan explicitly for recovery.
As part of the "April Dream" initiative, founded on April 1st to express dreams, Soukyu Co., Ltd. is committed to realizing this vision from Gunma. We aspire to cultivate the sauna culture, transforming Japan into a retreat nation where wellness is paramount.
