The Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), in collaboration with Elsevier, is thrilled to reveal that Dr. Jason N. Katz, MD, MHS, from NYU Grossman School of Medicine, has been appointed as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the new Journal of Cardiac Failure-Intersections. This groundbreaking journal aims to enhance the understanding and treatment of heart failure by connecting interdisciplinary expertise in the cardiovascular sector.
Scheduled to launch its first issue in 2025, Journal of Cardiac Failure-Intersections signifies a substantial addition to the JCF Family of Journals, accompanying the esteemed Journal of Cardiac Failure, which serves as HFSA's official publication.
Dr. Katz is a highly regarded clinician with board certifications in Cardiovascular Medicine, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, and Critical Care Medicine. His experience encompasses serving as the Associate Chief of Cardiology at Bellevue Hospital, the United States' oldest medical facility, along with directing its Inpatient Cardiology and the NYU Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship program. Moreover, he is an Associate Director of the NYU Left Ventricular Assist Device Program and a Professor of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
With a career dedicated to the advancement of heart failure knowledge and its treatment, Dr. Katz’s research has notably focused on managing cardiogenic shock and optimizing the use of mechanical circulatory support methods. His extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals further cements his expertise in the field. Notably, he also serves as the inaugural President of the Society of Critical Care Cardiology.
A Vision for Collaboration and Inclusivity
Dr. Katz expressed his enthusiasm for leading the Journal of Cardiac Failure-Intersections, stating, "I am thrilled to have this incredible opportunity to take the helm of the new Journal and to work collaboratively with the JCF family, HFSA, and countless amazing colleagues worldwide. I envision this platform fostering diverse and inclusive discussions around innovative ideas that resonate with our community and patients alike."
As Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Katz will define the journal’s editorial mission and standards, a top priority being to form a distinguished Editorial Board featuring leading experts from various medical specialties related to heart failure. This team will guarantee that JCF-Intersections maintain exceptional scientific credibility and innovation.
Dr. Katz highlighted the importance of encouraging scientific curiosity, particularly among younger researchers. He stated, "I look forward to discovering new and engaging ways to support scientific curiosity, especially among trainees and early career investigators, to enhance learning and to foster unique collaborations. Historically, many significant innovations have emerged from interdisciplinary discussions, and I anticipate this journal will embody that spirit—exploring intersections of heart failure with health policy, ethics, and even the humanities."
Exciting Future Prospects
Michael Felker, MD, FHFSA, and President of HFSA for 2024-2025, accentuated the significance of Dr. Katz’s appointment, remarking, "His vision and leadership will lay a strong foundation for the journal's future.
