Interhome's Analysis of Sustainable Summer Bookings

Interhome, the leading holiday home rental specialist in Europe, has recently launched a series entitled “Trends in Summer Bookings for Sustainable Holiday Accommodations.” This initiative, rooted in their proprietary booking data, delves into the evolving landscape of sustainability within major European holiday home markets.

Based on travel data for stays between June and September, the analysis covers Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. It reveals that bookings for sustainable accommodations have more than doubled between 2020 and 2025. The share of summer bookings for sustainable holiday properties at Interhome rose from 16.7% to an impressive 29.5%, marking an increase of 12.8 percentage points. This trend reflects a significant shift in consumer demand for eco-friendly vacation options.

The pace and extent of this transition vary by market. By 2025, Italy recorded the highest percentage of sustainable holiday bookings at 40.1%, followed closely by Germany at 36.1% and Switzerland at 35.9%. Meanwhile, Spain (29.3%) and France (16.1%) are at different stages of this development, showcasing diverse market dynamics.

Among the various sustainability features, recycling facilities showed the most significant cumulative gains across all five markets from 2020 to 2025, with notable increases in France, Italy, and Spain. Electric vehicle charging stations experienced the highest growth in France and Switzerland, while solar energy adoption was particularly pronounced in Italy and Spain.

The findings indicate that the advancement of sustainability varies across countries, not only in the current share of sustainable holiday bookings but also in the implementation of specific eco-friendly characteristics.
