CATL Unveils the TENER Sodium Energy Storage System



On June 22, 2026, CATL made a groundbreaking announcement in Munich, Germany. The company introduced the TENER Sodium Energy Storage System, marking a significant advancement as the world’s first sodium-ion energy storage solution that has been validated in real-world conditions. This innovative system paves the way for a more sustainable and efficient energy storage future, especially in the context of increasing reliance on renewable energy sources.

CATL, a leader in battery technology, has achieved commercial maturity with this new energy storage system, which is anticipated to reach cumulative shipments of 1 GWh by the end of 2026. Deliveries are set to commence globally in June 2027, positioning CATL at the forefront of the energy storage market.

William Wu, Director of CATL's Energy Storage Technology Center, emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering energy independence worldwide. He stated, “Our mission is to advance battery chemistry based on widely accessible resources, which can satisfy the energy demands of a growing global population.” This innovation reflects a shift towards utilizing sodium, which is significantly more abundant than lithium, promising better safety, cost-effectiveness, and performance under extreme temperatures.

Why Sodium-Ion?



As the demand for renewable energy surges, conventional lithium-based energy storage systems have shown vulnerabilities due to supply chain dependencies and fluctuating prices. Sodium, on the other hand, is dramatically more available, presenting a viable alternative that can mitigate the risks associated with lithium resources. The TENER Sodium system is designed to deliver superior energy performance and flexibility while ensuring enhanced safety features.

Amanda Xu, CTO of ESS and President of ESS Europe at CATL, echoed this sentiment during her keynote address at the launch, noting, “Success is now defined by creating long-term value rather than just scale.” With this operational philosophy, the TENER Sodium solution aims to not only support immediate energy needs but also adapt to future energy storage technologies.

Features and Benefits



The TENER Sodium Energy Storage System is engineered with a fully modular architecture that offers several benefits:

1. Simplified Deployment: Each module weighs around 42 tonnes, with only 34 required for a complete 1 GWh installation, streamlining the deployment process.

2. Flexible Configuration: Energy and power blocks can be tailored for specific durations, ranging from 1 to 8 hours, providing tailored solutions for diverse requirements.

3. Cost-Efficient Maintenance: Faulty modules can be quickly replaced without disturbing the entire system, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing overall costs.

Moreover, CATL has integrated advanced systems into TENER Sodium, such as a dedicated bidirectional (Bi-DC) voltage regulation system, which optimizes power output across a wide voltage range. This not only boosts round-trip efficiency by nearly 2% but also strengthens grid support.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has been purpose-built to fully leverage sodium chemistry, significantly improving safety margins and operational flexibility compared to traditional lithium systems. Other features include low auxiliary energy consumption and a quieter operation, making the TENER Sodium system more community-friendly and cost-effective.

A Decade of Development



The journey towards this innovative solution began in 2016 when CATL invested heavily in sodium-ion battery research and development. With nearly €1.2 billion spent, the company has assembled a formidable team of over 300 R&D professionals, resulting in more than 1,600 patents. The comprehensive development process has encompassed every stage of manufacturing, from material procurement to cell production, ensuring readiness for commercial deployment.

CATL has established production capacities that can deliver substantial quantities of sodium-ion materials, including plans for additional expansion to accommodate increasing demand. With readiness to begin deliveries in China as early as September 2026, and international markets following in mid-2027, CATL's TENER Sodium system is on the verge of large-scale adoption.
