Avalara Report Highlights AI Adoption and E-Invoicing Readiness Gaps in Finance Teams
Avalara's 2026 State of Finance Report
Avalara, Inc., a leading figure in agentic AI solutions for tax and compliance, recently released its 2026 State of Finance report, shedding light on the evolving landscape of finance and tax operations. The findings illuminate the widespread adoption of AI technologies, yet they also reveal a significant gap in readiness for global e-invoicing mandates, raising alarms for numerous organizations.
Overview of the Report
Conducted in partnership with Hanover Research, this comprehensive study surveyed 400 finance, tax, and accounting professionals across diverse sectors in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Notably, over 63% of respondents worked in firms with annual revenues exceeding $50 million, while 21% hailed from organizations generating at least $500 million.
The report articulates a key insight: although AI has become integral within finance teams, with 100% of respondents reporting the use of at least one AI application, the lapse in readiness for e-invoicing and real-time tax reporting is concerning. Specifically, 86% of finance professionals feel prepared for global e-invoicing mandates, yet only 50% have largely automated these processes. Furthermore, 30% indicated that they only comply with e-invoicing rules when legally mandated.
The Growing Importance of AI
The impressive uptake of AI represents a watershed moment for finance teams. According to the report, many respondents, around 53%, are prioritizing investments in agentic AI above other technology sectors, including cybersecurity and data analytics. This is a marked increase from previous years: in 2025, only 84% reported similar AI engagement. The analysis notes that AI is already embedded in finance and ERP systems at 43% of organizations, with many professionals utilizing commercial AI models.
However, actual utilization rates tell a different story. Currently, only 29% of finance and tax teams are employing agentic AI solutions, suggesting a disparity between ambition and actual deployment.
The E-Invoicing Readiness Gap
One of the starkest findings from Avalara's report is the global e-invoicing readiness gap. With more than 80 nations now implementing or preparing to enforce e-invoicing and real-time reporting standards, the identified gap between perceived compliance readiness and actual capability poses a commendable risk for finance teams. In this increasingly stringent regulatory landscape, organizations that can adapt their strategies promptly will likely maintain a competitive edge.
In addition, the urgency for finance organizations to unify their compliance strategies across jurisdictions is underscored. The report states, “Organizations that unify their compliance approach now will gain a distinct competitive advantage.
