Dr. Sultan Al Jaber Unveils World’s First 24/7 Renewable Energy Project

In a groundbreaking announcement during the opening of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE's Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, unveiled the world’s first renewable energy project with the capability to operate 24/7. This revolutionary initiative is set to change the way energy is produced and consumed, tackling the long-standing challenge of energy intermittency that has hindered the renewable energy sector for decades.

The project, launched in partnership with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), combines 5.2 gigawatts (GW) of solar photovoltaic energy generation with 19 gigawatt-hours of battery storage. This innovative combination is projected to provide 1 GW of baseload renewable energy continuously, marking a significant stride forward in the quest for reliable renewable energy.

Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the importance of this project in the context of growing global power demands, driven by trends such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the development of emerging markets. Reports indicate that global energy demand, which is currently around 9,000 GW, may surge to over 15,000 GW by 2035 and could reach an astonishing 35,000 GW by 2050, largely propelled by technologies requiring significant energy resources.

During his speech, Dr. Al Jaber described this moment as being at a pivotal junction for the future, informed by the pressing need to diversify the energy mix and enhance the sustainability of energy systems. He called on states, industries, and stakeholders globally to unite and forge a path toward sustainable economic growth while addressing energy demands. This collaborative approach aims to unlock unprecedented economic opportunities and ensure long-term energy security for millions.

The UAE has historically been at the forefront of the energy sector, setting trends and achieving milestones globally in solar, wind, nuclear, and AI technologies. The visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has been instrumental in these successes, guiding the nation in establishing significant achievements in sustainability and energy production.

Elaborating on the challenges of energy intermittency, Dr. Al Jaber acknowledged that traditional renewable sources, while vital for a sustainable future, often struggle to provide continuous power. He stated, “For decades, the greatest barrier to renewable energy has been its intermittency. How can we power a world that never sleeps with energy sources that do?” With this new project, the UAE is poised to answer that question while combating climate change and promoting energy innovation.

Dr. Al Jaber also urged policymakers to foster an environment that embraces diverse energy options rather than limiting them through overly restrictive regulations. He urged that energy and sustainability are not opposing forces but essential partners in the broader goal of achieving socio-economic progress.

The XRG investment company, newly launched in Abu Dhabi, is a strategic initiative to address these emergent energy needs by focusing on low-carbon fuels, infrastructure, and other energy innovations that integrate well into existing energy frameworks.

Moreover, Dr. Al Jaber reiterated the significance of placing people at the center of these advancements, a principle that resonates with the ethos of the Zayed Sustainability Prize. This award emphasizes the human impact of sustainable initiatives, ensuring that innovations in energy translate into real-world benefits, such as clean water access and educational opportunities.

As the event concluded, he called for a collective commitment to redefine and reshape the narrative surrounding energy accessibility and sustainability. Dr. Al Jaber’S vision is for a future where energy availability and sustainability are not viewed as competing objectives but as intertwined aspirations. His closing remarks urged, “Let us work together to forge a new path that will unlock growth, drive prosperity, and create unprecedented economic opportunities for all.”

Masdar, a leader in renewable energy, reaffirms its commitment to driving the development of green technologies. With plans to reach a renewable energy capacity of 100 GW by 2030 and establish itself as a major player in green hydrogen production, Masdar exemplifies innovation and commitment to global sustainability efforts.
