A Sweet Celebration of 99 Years of Meiji Milk Chocolate
In a delightful twist to celebrate its 99th anniversary, Meiji Seika is launching the project 'Melody of Meiji' starting September 13, 2025. This innovative initiative will feature a total of 12 renowned artists, including iconic names such as Akina Nakamori, Hiromi Go (五木ひろし), Toshi-LOW from BRAHMAN, and the beloved Z-generation band, FRUITS ZIPPER. Each artist will interpret and perform the famous 'Meiji Chocolate Theme,' composed by Izumi Taku, bringing a nostalgic yet contemporary flair to this beloved jingle.
The first collaboration video will spotlight Akina Nakamori, a superstar of the 1980s, marking her return to a corporate commercial after nearly 15 years. This collaboration promises to reveal her joyful spirit as she sings about her love for chocolate and shares memories of her past involvement in Meiji's Valentine’s campaigns. The monthly video releases will feature one artist at a time in a celebration of music and chocolate that transcends generations.
In addition to the musical project, Meiji is also rolling out a special collaboration with five celebrated authors, including Ito Ogawa and Kaori Ekuni, who will pen original short stories centered around the theme of chocolate in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Meiji Milk Chocolate. Readers can look forward to the first installment published in the magazine MOE, with highlights from Ogawa's work and subsequent stories featuring Ekuni and other authors.
As part of the anniversary festivities, a major ad campaign titled 'Time-Traveling Chocolate' will appear on the front page of the Yomiuri Shimbun on September 13, showcasing historical packaging designs from the various eras of the brand. Additionally, a limited-time offer of the 'Meiji Milk Chocolate Big Pack,' featuring these classic designs, will be available from November 18 at supermarkets and convenience stores across Japan.
The 'Melody of Meiji' project not only spotlights the rich history of Meiji Milk Chocolate, which began in the Taisho era, but also highlights its evolution into a cherished national treat. Over the decades, the treat has witnessed cultural shifts in Japan, and through creative marketing campaigns, it has established itself as a special chocolate choice during Valentine's celebrations.
The story of Meiji Milk Chocolate is one of resilience, creativity, and joy—spanning almost a century of sweet memories. It has been a constant companion in the lives of many, offering comfort and deliciousness in every bite. As the campaign emphasizes, each piece of chocolate shared carries not just flavor but also kindness, fostering connections and smiles among people.
In celebrating 99 years of Meiji Milk Chocolate, we reflect on the sweetness that connects generations and express our gratitude for the memories created through simple gestures of sharing joy. The 'Melody of Meiji' is not just a tribute to a song but a heartfelt celebration of love, nostalgia, and the joy of chocolate itself.
Mark your calendars for September 13 to join in the celebrations and stay tuned for the upcoming releases, both musical and literary, that will carry forward the legacy of Meiji Milk Chocolate for many more years to come.
