The Shaw Prize 2025 Recognizes Exceptional Achievements in Astronomy, Life Sciences, and Mathematics

The 2025 Shaw Prize in Astronomy is awarded jointly to two renowned experts: John Richard Bond, a professor at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics and University Professor at the University of Toronto, and George Efstathiou, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. They received this accolade for their groundbreaking research in cosmology, particularly their studies on cosmic microwave background fluctuations. Their predictions have been corroborated by numerous ground-based, balloon-borne, and space-borne instruments, allowing for precise determinations of the universe's age, geometry, and the composition of mass and energy.

In the realm of life sciences and medicine, the Shaw Prize was awarded to Wolfgang Baumeister, the emeritus director and scientific member at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Germany. He was recognized for his pioneering developments and application of cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), a state-of-the-art imaging technique that enables the three-dimensional visualization of biological samples, including proteins and cellular compartments, in their natural cellular environments.

For Mathematical Sciences, the Shaw Prize was awarded to Kenji Fukaya, a professor at the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications and Yau Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua University, PRC. Fukaya was honored for his innovative work in symplectic geometry, particularly for conceptualizing what is now known as Fukaya's category, which consists of Lagrangians in a symplectic manifold. His leadership in constructing this monumental category and his impactful contributions to symplectic topology, mirror symmetry, and gauge theory have profoundly influenced the field.

This year marks the twenty-second installment of the Shaw Prize, an award that has continuously sought to recognize and encourage significant accomplishments in these vital areas of scientific inquiry. The formal ceremony for the Shaw Prize 2025 will take place on October 21, 2025, in Hong Kong, creating an opportunity for the global scientific community to come together and celebrate these remarkable achievements.
