Discovering the Unseen: An Artistic Journey with Ueta and Tanaka
YUGEN Gallery in Minato, Tokyo, is set to celebrate its fourth anniversary with a captivating exhibition titled 'Exploring the Invisible' on February 26, 2026. This exhibition marks the second part of a special event aimed at showcasing diverse expressions of contemporary art from various perspectives. The theme of this part of the exhibition focuses on what is hidden—the invisible elements that shape our perceptions of art and existence.
Art transcends the mere presentation of form and materials; it encapsulates intangible themes—time, physical presence, and the layers of thought—into forms that enrich viewers' experiences. Artists Sosuke Ueta and Gakusyu Tanaka will respond to this theme using distinct mediums: printmaking and calligraphy. Both art forms, while different in technique, harbor connections that allow viewers to perceive the ‘invisible.’
The Art of Printmaking and Calligraphy
Printmaking serves as a witness to the accumulation of time through layers, creating visual artifacts that represent not only the physical process but also emotional resonances. On the other hand, calligraphy captures the immediacy of the moment, documenting the fleeting traces of inspiration and emotion. Yet, like printmaking, calligraphy also emerges through repetition and selection, highlighting key moments in its creation.
In the exhibiting works, the invisible layers of time, body, and thought intertwine, revealing their significance through forms that evoke sensations and ideas that often go unnoticed in our fast-paced lives. Audiences can expect to encounter a space where these art forms coalesce, creating an environment rich with the essence of the unseen.
The Artists
Sosuke Ueta
Born and raised in the scenic Setouchi region, Sosuke Ueta's work reflects a profound inquiry into the relationship between people and nature. His artistic practice emphasizes the intersection of various disciplines—merging printmaking with painting and design. His installations challenge viewers’ perceptions and seek to engage them spatially, as seen in past exhibitions like 'RE: habilitation' at Geidai Art Plaza in Tokyo and 'The point of truth, beauty and knowledge' in Dortmund, Germany.
Gakusyu Tanaka
Originating from Fukuoka, Gakusyu Tanaka approached calligraphy after discovering the expressive possibilities from his left-handedness. His works extend beyond traditional borders, influenced by contemporary practices and ideas from architecture. Tanaka’s recent projects, such as those presented at ART SHODO EDGE and Planning#2, illustrate his ongoing exploration of what it means to create through the medium of calligraphy in today's world.
