City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) Celebrates Its First Graduation Ceremony

On June 22, 2026, the City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) held its first graduation ceremony, celebrating a landmark event in its short history. With over 420 Master's graduates in attendance, the ceremony marked the successful culmination of hard work and dedication for these students who traveled from Dongguan to Hong Kong to participate in this significant occasion.

Among the prominent figures at the event were Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, and Ms. Li Jun, Vice Mayor of the Dongguan Municipal People's Government. Their attendance highlighted the importance of this educational milestone, further solidifying the university's status as a key player in the Greater Bay Area's educational landscape. During his speech, Mr. Leung underscored the value of cross-border education and urged the graduates to leverage the opportunities available in the Greater Bay Area to enhance regional and national innovation.

Ms. Li echoed his sentiments, emphasizing the university's pivotal role in the GBA education ecosystem, bolstered by substantial support from local industries and innovation resources. Professor Michael Ngai, the Council Chairman of CityUHK, took the opportunity to share the university's impressive global credentials, proudly noting that CityUHK has been recognized as the "Most International University in the World" for three consecutive years by Times Higher Education, and its high rankings in the U.S. News and QS World University Rankings.

Professor Chun-Sing Lee, the Acting President, addressed the need for graduates to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset as a vital part of their future careers, promoting the idea that "The future belongs to those who dare to begin." Meanwhile, Professor Duan Baoyan, the President of CityUHK (Dongguan), motivationally reminded graduates that life is an extended journey, and the pursuit of a successful career requires resilience and perseverance in the face of challenges.

During the ceremony, Mr. Leung recognized the Top 10 Graduates and presented them with certificates. Among them, student representative Nie Liheng shared his inspiring journey, discussing how his education in Dongguan helped foster resilience and a broader perspective on cross-border opportunities.

One of the highlights was the introduction of the inaugural Alumni Liaison Ambassadors, designed to enhance the relationship between the graduates in Dongguan and the broader Hong Kong community. Many graduates are already embarking on promising careers, securing positions in leading organizations such as Tencent, Alibaba, and Baidu, among others. Some graduates are taking advantage of the IANG visa scheme to work in Hong Kong, while others are aiming for doctoral studies at prestigious institutions like Nanyang Technological University and Fudan University.

Founded in 2024, CityUHK (Dongguan) has quickly advanced its interdisciplinary and industry-linked educational offerings within just two years.
