The nonprofit organization Sankakusha, established to support young individuals who lack adult guidance, has teamed up with Transcosmos, a prominent company based in Tokyo, to facilitate unique opportunities for youth. On February 26, 2025, at the CX Square Ikebukuro EAST location, both organizations hosted a workplace tour and an eSports event to foster interactions among participating youths.
This initiative aims to break barriers for those who feel isolated from career platforms by offering them real insights into corporate environments and helping them visualize their professional futures. By engaging naturally with company employees, the program seeks to encourage these young individuals to take their first steps toward social participation. On the day of the event, four young people linked with Sankakusha joined three staff members for center tours and gaming sessions.
Learning About the Work Environment
The day commenced with a tour of the Transcosmos office, where participants gained hands-on experience of a functioning call center. Contrary to the conventional perception of call centers as noisy environments, the facility showcased cutting-edge operations heavily centered around computer tasks, correcting misconceptions and providing new insights.
One participant reflected, "I had always thought call centers were just about constantly answering calls, but I was surprised to learn that many tasks can be completed purely on the computer." Another remarked, "I initially resisted the idea of phone work, but knowing it largely involves computers made it feel more approachable."
This awareness allowed attendees to translate vague anxieties about working into a clearer understanding of potential workplace dynamics. During a break, the youths observed the relaxed atmosphere designed for employees, prompting comments such as, "It would be fun to work in such a beautiful office" and "The break room seems stylish and pleasant for unwinding."
Connection Through eSports
Following the tour, participants joined in an eSports competition organized by Transcosmos. Engaging with Nintendo Switch games like Mario Kart, they connected online with other Transcosmos locations across Japan, fostering a sense of community despite physical distances.
Through collaborative gaming experiences, traditional hierarchical structures faded away, allowing for genuine communication. Participants expressed joy, saying, "Playing Mario Kart after such a long time was awesome, and I was happy to win," and "Even though it was online, I was thrilled to interact with employees through gaming," with comments on the significant experience of playing in such a vibrant environment.
Supporting Young People's First Steps
The interaction and exploration not only eased the initial tension among the young participants but also encouraged them to ask proactive questions, showing increased engagement with company staff. Sankakusha recognizes that many young individuals possess a strong desire to work but often find themselves hesitating due to relational anxieties or lack of exposure to professional settings.
By providing a reassuring atmosphere that fosters a gradual progression towards understanding professional commitments and expectations, the initiative exemplifies the importance of increasing comfort levels in potential workplace environments.
Future Outlook: Sustainably Building Relationships
Moving forward, the agenda includes:
- - Continuous visits to strengthen workplace understanding,
- - Ongoing opportunities for interaction through eSports competitions,
- - Individualized mentorship from Transcosmos employees to guide young participants.
These strategies are geared toward creating environments where young individuals can expand their horizons and explore their potential within corporate frameworks. Sankakusha remains committed to partnering with businesses to broaden opportunities for youth, empowering them to take confident strides into adulthood while fostering societal connections.
