Otaru Retreat Kuramure Set to Rebrand Opening on February 24, 2026

Otaru Retreat Kuramure: A New Era in Wellness

Otaru Retreat Kuramure, located in Otaru City, Hokkaido, will undergo a rebranding and grand reopening on February 24, 2026. Managed by Onko Chishin Co., Ltd., this destination hotel aims to craft unique experiences around the theme of "fermentation," drawing on the rich heritage of local culture and natural resources.

Renowned architect Makoto Nakayama, who initially designed the hotel, has led the refurbishment efforts, revamping various rooms and the main bath area. The new design encapsulates the essence of "fermentation"—both as a concept and a sensory experience. Guests will indulge in enzyme baths and dining experiences that highlight the health benefits of fermentation, contributing to overall wellness and relaxation.

Facilities and New Offerings

Enzyme Baths and Private Hot Springs

At Kuramure, guests can experience the newly designed private hot springs, ensuring a tranquil and secluded atmosphere. The two main baths have been transformed into reservation-only private baths, allowing guests to enjoy uninterrupted personal time. The enzyme baths, supervised by the century-old Ota Enzyme Co., incorporate locally sourced conifer sawdust combined with a fermented solution to provide a unique warming experience.
  • - Enzyme Bath Fees: ¥6,600 for 80 minutes per person; maximum of two guests allowed.

Spa Services

In addition to enzyme baths, a new spa service will be available, enhancing the wellness journey. The spa treatments utilize the "Super Ota" plant-based fermented beverage from Ota Enzyme, alongside natural Hokkaido aromatherapy.
  • - Spa Treatment Fees: Starting from ¥22,500 for oil massages.

Private Hot Springs

The outdoor hot springs offer stunning views surrounded by seasonal nature and are particularly effective for alleviating muscle pain and fatigue. The hot spring water sourced from Asari River Hot Springs is known for its therapeutic properties.
  • - Private Hot Spring Fees: ¥11,000 for 90 minutes.

Reservations for enzyme baths, spa treatments, and private hot springs will be available starting in early April 2026. Details will be announced on the official website.

Room Amenities and Dining Experience

All guest rooms are equipped with natural hot spring baths, allowing guests to unwind at their convenience. The hotel's beverage menu prominently features wines from Hokkaido, with local breweries contributing unique flavors.

The dining experience at Kuramure will highlight the region's traditional fermented foods, such as "Nuka-nishin" and seasonal "Hakkou Hassun" plates, beautifully presented in a private dining space for a calming culinary journey.

Design Philosophy and Future Aspirations

The recent renovations ensure that the architectural integrity envisioned by Nakayama remains intact, while modern comforts enhance the guest experience. Notable features include Grape Dyed cushions made from winemaking byproducts, adding an ecological touch to the decor.

As Nakayama comments, 28 years have passed since the initial sketches, and he wishes for Kuramure to continue being cherished like a beloved child. General Manager Hiroki Yoshii expresses excitement about the hotel's evolution and the importance of creating a space that resonates with Hokkaido's rich culture and history while offering guests a serene and rejuvenating escape.

With a focus on meticulous hospitality and wellness practices, Otaru Retreat Kuramure sets out to create unforgettable experiences for guests looking to unwind and indulge in the beauty of Hokkaido.
