North Island Credit Union Celebrates International Credit Union Day
On October 16, 2025, North Island Credit Union proudly participated in the global celebration of International Credit Union Day, an event that honors the remarkable achievements of the credit union movement. This day, observed annually, serves as a reminder of the significant impact credit unions have on their members and the larger community.
The celebration took place at North Island Credit Union's headquarters in San Diego and attracted a diverse group of attendees, including local credit union members, other credit union representatives from the San Diego area, and elected officials. This year marks the 77th anniversary of International Credit Union Day, celebrated under the inspiring theme "Cooperation for a Prosperous World".
During the event, attendees gathered to recognize the contributions of credit unions to the local economy and community. A series of proclamations were presented, acknowledging the vital role these institutions play. Notable voices included California Assemblymember Carl DeMaio and representatives from various California legislative offices, including those of Assemblymembers David Alvarez, Dr. LaShae Collins-Sharp, and Senators Catherine Blakespear, alongside U.S. Representatives Scott Peters and Juan Vargas. Participating credit unions included Cabrillo Credit Union, California Coast Credit Union, Frontwave Credit Union, Mission Federal Credit Union, San Diego County Credit Union, and Wheelhouse Credit Union.
Steve O'Connell, President/CEO of North Island Credit Union, expressed the spirit of the day: "International Credit Union Day is a time to celebrate the heart of the credit union movement - People Helping People. We’re proud to open our doors and come together with fellow San Diego credit unions, special guests, and most importantly, our members to honor this tradition. This celebration is not only about reflecting on our shared history, but also about reaffirming our commitment to serving our communities and building a stronger financial future for everyone."
Since its inception in 1948, International Credit Union Day has been observed every year on the third Thursday of October, allowing credit unions across the globe to come together and celebrate their unique achievements. This day offers a platform to promote awareness of the benefits of membership within credit unions, which are recognized as not-for-profit financial cooperatives dedicated to supporting over 411 million members in 104 countries. With over 74,000 credit unions worldwide, these institutions are renowned for their role in fostering positive economic and social change.
The event was organized by the World Council of Credit Unions, which serves as the global representative entity for credit unions and their advocacy. Accentuating the day’s activities, various programs showcased credit unions’ efforts and strategies for helping their members achieve financial literacy and stability.
