Insights from Summer's End Survey by LINE Yahoo
LINE Yahoo Inc. conducted a survey regarding perceptions of the end of summer, targeting individuals aged between 10 and 60 across Japan. This study reveals fascinating details about how people experience the transition from summer to autumn.
Key Findings
- - 49.5% of respondents feel that summer ends in late September.
- - The temperature markers for sensing the end of summer are most commonly identified as a maximum of 25°C and a minimum of 20°C.
- - A striking 86.0% of participants noted that summer seems to end later than in previous years.
- - Furthermore, 80.6% believe that this year's end of summer has been particularly unclear.
- - The predominant cue that signifies the end of summer is the cooler temperatures experienced in the mornings and evenings.
- - Those in Hokkaido also report lower temperature thresholds for marking the end of summer compared to other regions.
These findings indicate that nearly half (49.5%) of the people surveyed recognize late September as the time when summer culminates. Additionally, when asked about the temperature readings that signify summer's end, the majority mentioned a high of 25°C and a low of 20°C. This temperature gauge seems to serve as a standard for defining the transition in season.
The survey results suggest an observable trend: nearly 90% (86.0%) of participants feel that summer's endpoint has been gradually moving later, paired with 80.6% stating that this year's conclusion feels less straightforward. This perception is likely driven by the ongoing warmth and delayed seasonal events, solidifying a common sentiment that summers are becoming longer and harder to pinpoint.
Detailed Insights
When does summer really end?
The question regarding when last summer felt distinctly over saw 49.5% of participants indicating late September. Following this, 21.2% noted early October, and only 10.9% acknowledged early September, showcasing that many are conscious of summer's end occurring after the last days of August.
The increasing stretch of late-summer heat and high temperatures seem to be altering people's perceptions of seasonal transitions, leading them to interpret the changing seasons as happening later relative to official meteorological standards.
Perceptions of Extended Summers
An overwhelming 86.0% believe summer's conclusion is occurring later than before, and 80.6% found this year’s transition difficult to detect, especially as high temperatures persist into September. Such climatic conditions can make people feel that the seasons, and corresponding festivities, no longer align with traditional timelines, intensifying the sensation of an extended summer.
How do people sense summer's end?
When asked what indicates the conclusion of summer, 77.7% of respondents agreed that cooler temperatures signal seasonal change. Next on the list was noticing cooler evening temperatures (69.4%) and the diminishing sound of cicadas or the emergence of autumn insects (35.3%). Clearly, these natural shifts are major indicators for signaling the change in seasons, notably how the contrasting temperature during the day and night catalyze thoughts of the approaching fall.
Temperature Signals for End of Summer
Participants shared their temperature references for sensing the end of summer: a maximum of 25°C (30.8%), followed by 26°C (12.5%) and 28°C (12.2%). Interestingly, the most common low temperature noted was 20°C (27.9%), suggesting that for many, a mix of 25°C daytime and 20°C nighttime constitutes the signifier of summer’s conclusion.
Examining responses by region, Hokkaido displayed a unique tendency, with a collection of responses revealing that 90.7% of participants believe the end of summer occurs when temperatures fall to 25-23°C or lower. Additionally, responses indicating a nighttime temperature threshold of 20-18°C demonstrated a notable deviation in Hokkaido's interpretation of summer’s endpoint compared to the rest of Japan.
