Introduction to the Rescue Training Module™
In light of the increased focus on disaster preparedness and response in Japan, the innovative new training equipment,
Rescue Training Module™, developed by Gensai Solutions, is set to enhance the capabilities of rescue and medical teams during disasters. Scheduled for April 19-20, 2025, this training event will take place at Nihon University in Funabashi, bringing together approximately 100 participants, including firefighters, medical professionals, and government officials from across the country.
Innovative Training Environment
The
Rescue Training Module™ is designed under the technical supervision of Professor Naoya Miyazato from the Department of Architecture at Nihon University. This state-of-the-art facility allows for a real-world, safe simulation of disaster situations, particularly in collapsed buildings where victims often require immediate care to prevent life-threatening conditions such as Crush Syndrome.
By replicating the actual conditions surrounding collapsed structures, the module offers a practical training experience aimed at both rescue and medical personnel. The initiative is particularly critical, as historical events like the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake highlighted the urgent need for simultaneous medical intervention during rescue missions.
Importance and Development of Rescue Training Module™
Following the devastating 1995 earthquake, the concept of
Crush Syndrome—where victims trapped under rubble suffer from severe health complications—gained recognition, showcasing the importance of immediate medical care as part of the rescue operations. The
Rescue Training Module™ is built to fill the gaps in previous training infrastructures, which lacked a cohesive approach to integrate rescue efforts with medical support.
The module has undergone various test trainings and improvements since its first prototype was developed in October 2024 in Miyazaki Prefecture, with plans to implement it at a facilities in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Features of the Rescue Training Module™
- - Safe Simulation of Collapse Scenarios: Replicates typical building collapse structures to enable realistic rescue and medical training.
- - Systematic Training Integration: Combines rescue operations with medical procedures, including specialized training for confined space medicine (CSM).
- - Portable and Adaptable: Designed for quick transportation and setup, making it useful for training across various regional disaster preparedness drills.
This module aims to equip frontline responders with the necessary skills to act decisively and accurately in high-pressure situations. Through collaborations with municipalities, fire departments, law enforcement, and medical institutions, Gensai Solutions aims to expand these training opportunities nationwide.
Expert Commentary on the Training Initiative
太吾阪本, an expert in emergency medicine, emphasizes the critical nature of the training. He notes, "The lessons learned from past earthquakes underscore the importance of integrating medical care with rescue efforts. The absence of facilities that facilitate such critical training has led to inadequacies in emergency responses during past disasters. The upcoming training course represented by the
Rescue Training Module™ will be a groundbreaking initiative, aiming to prepare individuals to respond efficiently regardless of when or where a disaster occurs."
