Kutch Copper Becomes Newest Member of the International Copper Association
Kutch Copper Joins the International Copper Association
Kutch Copper Ltd. (KCL), a subsidiary of the Adani Group, has officially become a member of the International Copper Association (ICA), a pivotal move that showcases its commitment to sustainable practices in the copper industry. This development was announced on January 16, 2025, and marks a significant step for both KCL and the ICA, as they aim to strengthen their roles within the global copper market.
The ICA represents approximately 50% of the world’s copper production, serving as a not-for-profit trade association. Its mission encompasses the promotion, protection, and defense of the global copper industry. Adani Group, through Kutch Copper, is making waves in the industry with its ambitious plans to construct a state-of-the-art copper smelter in Mundra, Gujarat, with an initial capacity of 0.5 million tons per annum. This smelter not only aims to produce copper cathodes and rods but also various byproducts, with a future expansion planned to double its capacity.
Dr. Vinay Prakash, Managing Director at Kutch Copper, expressed enthusiasm about joining the ICA, highlighting India’s potential to become a significant copper hub in the next few decades. He emphasized that KCL's membership will facilitate their participation in sustainability initiatives and innovation within the copper sector. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with the global copper community to enhance the copper value chain, crucial for the transition to a net-zero economy,” he stated.
ICA President and CEO, Juan Ignacio Díaz, shared his excitement over KCL joining their ranks, noting that the company’s efforts in promoting sustainable and innovative copper production align with ICA’s objectives. He remarked, “Their presence bolsters our mission to advocate for copper as a key enabler of technologies essential for global decarbonization.” The ICA board chair, Stephen Rowland of Glencore, echoed this sentiment, encouraging KCL's commitment towards driving positive change in the industry through sustainable practices and new applications for copper.
Kutch Copper Ltd. is strategically positioned to meet the surging demand for copper in India, particularly in contributing to the green energy sector. Its vision aligns with the broader goals of the Adani Group, which has diverse business interests, including energy, transport, and consumer sectors. The copper production facility is envisioned as a greenfield project, emphasizing a commitment to environmentally sustainable production methods, thereby contributing significantly to India's growing copper requirement.
Established to join the global efforts in responsible copper production, Kutch Copper aims to leverage its partnership with the ICA to advance technological innovations and environmentally friendly practices within the copper supply chain. The company is keen on implementing the best practices in production to ensure that its operations are not only efficient but also adhere to sustainable standards.
To encapsulate, Kutsh Copper's entry into the International Copper Association is a pivotal moment that signifies the growing importance of responsible and innovative approaches in the copper industry. Both KCL and ICA are poised to collaborate in enhancing the sector's sustainability and expanding the applications of copper, which is vital for modern technology and infrastructure. This partnership not only marks a new chapter for Kutch Copper but also aligns with global trends towards more sustainable practices in resource extraction and production.
