Discover the Essence of Japanese Rice Culture
Plenus, a notable company based in Ginza, Chuo Ward, is embracing Japan's rich rice culture and aiming to pass down its significance to future generations. Known for its diverse food offerings such as “Hotto Motto” takeaway bento, “Yayoiken” dining restaurants, “MK Restaurant” featuring Shabu Shabu and authentic dim sum, and “KAYAVA.” ramen outlets, Plenus is a prominent player in Japan's food industry.
On March 7, 2026, Plenus will host a special event at their office in Kayabacho, Tokyo, featuring a colossal art piece titled "The Seasons of Terraced Rice Fields," created by former Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa. This event will allow participants to delve into the beauty of terraced rice fields, as well as savor the taste of rice grown in these iconic landscapes.
Event Overview
The event consists of two main activities:
1. Understanding Terraced Rice Fields
Participants will learn about the marvels of terraced rice fields through a captivating slideshow. These fields, often considered “the strongest infrastructure,” play a crucial role in environmental conservation and provide a multifaceted insight into Japan’s agricultural heritage. They are not just fields but monumental structures that have supported Japanese society for generations. This segment aims to reshape the perspective on terraced rice fields from merely stunning landscapes to pivotal components of Japan’s infrastructure.
2. Viewing “The Seasons of Terraced Rice Fields”
The highlight of the event is the viewing of the magnificent mural, “The Seasons of Terraced Rice Fields,” which stands about 8 meters tall. It beautifully encapsulates the seasonal changes of Japanese terraced rice fields, enabling viewers to appreciate the grandeur from different angles as they ascend the atrium's two floors. Additionally, participants will have the chance to watch recorded interviews with Morihiro Hosokawa to deepen their understanding of the artwork's inspiration and creation process.
3. Tasting Terraced Rice
Following the enlightening lectures and art appreciation, participants will have a chance to taste rice harvested from the terraced fields. By recognizing the long history and effort behind the cultivation of this rice, attendees will likely experience a profound appreciation for the flavors and cultural significance of what is often taken for granted.
