Halifax Humane Society Expands Services with New Community Veterinary Hospital in Daytona Beach

In a significant step towards enhancing animal welfare in Volusia County, the Halifax Humane Society has officially acquired the prominent Latitude Margaritaville Sales Office, located at 2400 LPGA Boulevard in Daytona Beach, Florida. This purchase represents an important milestone for the organization, as it aims to broaden access to affordable veterinary care for pets and their owners.

The chosen facility, boasting 8,152 square feet, is set to undergo a remarkable redesign and remodel, transforming it into the Halifax Humane Society’s first Community Veterinary Hospital. This initiative is not merely about providing routine care; the organization intends to offer a comprehensive range of medical services for dogs and cats. The facilities will be tailored to ensure that pets remain healthy, joyful, and most importantly, with their families.

Sean Hawkins, the CEO of Halifax Humane Society, highlighted the significance of this project, noting that the number of dogs and cats surrendered by their owners has escalated substantially, tripling within a year. The primary reason behind these heartbreaking decisions stems from the inability of pet owners to afford veterinary care. This trend is largely attributed to the ongoing national veterinary shortage, rising medical costs, and increasing economic pressures that confront many families today.

Hawkins emphasized that innovative access to care programs, such as the pending Community Veterinary Hospital, are crucial in addressing the underlying issues of pet relinquishment. He stated, "Nonprofit organizations like ours are focusing resources on initiatives that meet people in their communities and help them care better for their animals. No one should have to give up a beloved family member because of a vet bill they can’t pay. Our motto is 'No judgment, just help.'"

The acquisition itself cost $2.9 million and was made possible through a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor, whose legacy aims to benefit animal welfare at Halifax Humane Society. Hawkins expressed immense gratitude to the supporters and partners who facilitated this purchase, including contributions from Attorney Jeff Sweet, who provided his legal expertise for the transaction, and CTO Realty Growth, Inc., whose prior donations laid the groundwork for this expansion.

Looking ahead, it is estimated that remodeling and equipping the new veterinary hospital will cost around $2 million. While funds for the purchase have been secured, additional resources will need to be raised for ongoing operational costs. The organization is committed to offering veterinary services at affordable rates for individuals unable to visit private practice veterinarians, with a dedicated emergency fund established entirely through donations available to cover costs for the most vulnerable pet owners.

The transition into a modern, state-of-the-art facility is projected to take approximately ten months, with the hospital expected to open its doors in late 2026. "This project represents our continuous dedication to implementing impactful programs that benefit both the community and the pets they cherish," Hawkins added, reflecting on the importance of this expansion.

The Halifax Humane Society has been actively serving the community since 1937, focusing on preventing animal cruelty and providing a safe haven for animals in need. With a mission to deliver essential services, including sheltering and veterinary care, it aids over 15,000 animals annually through its various programs, including the Lohman Pet Adoption Center and the Redinger Spay Neuter Clinic.

As they embark on this transformative journey, Halifax Humane Society invites community members to support their efforts to enrich animal lives and strengthen the bond between pets and their owners.
