BE OPEN Regional Art Competition Fosters New Partnerships in West Africa

Collaborating for Cultural Growth in West Africa

The BE OPEN Regional Art competition, initiated by humanitarian think-tank BE OPEN and spearheaded by Elena Baturina, is making significant strides in nurturing emerging artists in West Africa. This initiative proudly announces partnerships aimed at elevating the visibility and representation of local talents, promoting their cultural, ethnic, and regional identities through art.

In its culmination for 2025, the BE OPEN Regional Art competition is identifying and showcasing artists from a diverse range of West African nations including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, St. Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha. This broad spectrum not only highlights the rich artistic heritage of the region but also opens up dialogues about cultural expression and identity.

“The aim is not only to recognize artistic talent but to provide these artists with a platform where their work can be appreciated and respected,” states Elena Baturina. “By featuring their creations in the BE OPEN Art gallery, we offer them necessary support and a larger audience.”

Partnerships that Enhance Artistic Exposure

The competition has garnered support from several key organizations dedicated to promoting African art and culture. Among them is the African Heritage Centre, a non-profit based in Canada, which serves to celebrate and disseminate the depth and beauty of African cultures and traditions. The centre organizes events, curates digital exhibitions, and provides educational resources that spotlight African heritage.

Similarly, the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA) plays a pivotal role in this effort, as it seeks to unify local artists and advocate for the Nigerian visual arts scene. The SNA aims to celebrate Nigerian fine arts while fostering a supportive community that brings together artists, cultural enthusiasts, and advocates to inspire creativity and cultural pride.

In Burkina Faso, the Association Arts Burkina stands out, promoting Burkinabé art on both regional and international levels. They collect and showcase original works of local artists, helping to bridge gaps between local talent and global opportunities.

The National Gallery of Art in Abuja oversees the artistic landscape of Nigeria and serves as a custodian for the nation's creative spirit. By nurturing modern Nigerian art, they play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility of local artists on both national and international stages.

A Thriving Artistic Ecosystem

Through this collaboration, BE OPEN Regional Art is not just a competition; it is the cornerstone of a thriving artistic ecosystem that fosters creativity, identity, and cultural dialogue among West African nations. By empowering young artists, the initiative lays the groundwork for future generations to explore and express their identities through art.

This support is particularly vital in a region rich in history but often underrepresented on global platforms. The participation of various stakeholders not only amplifies the voices of local artists but also contributes to a diverse and inclusive cultural narrative that reflects the essence of West African societies.

As these emerging artists prepare to showcase their work, the BE OPEN initiative promises to unlock new avenues for cultural exchange and appreciation, ensuring that the art of West Africa is celebrated both locally and around the world. The program stands as a testament to the belief that art transcends cultural boundaries and can be a powerful tool for change and awareness.
