Brightspeed Secures $31.2 Million to Enhance Internet Access in North Carolina Communities

Brightspeed's Significant Investment in North Carolina

Brightspeed, the third-largest fiber broadband provider in the United States, recently announced a landmark investment of $31.2 million awarded by the state of North Carolina. This funding aims to enhance the Brightspeed Fiber Internet network, a crucial step in bridging the digital divide across various underserved regions.

With this substantial investment, Brightspeed plans to expand its fiber network to an additional 18,000 locations spread across several counties, including Beaufort, Caldwell, Carteret, and more. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to deliver ultrafast and reliable internet service to families and businesses that have been historically overlooked in terms of connectivity.

Steve Brewer, Brightspeed’s regional director of government affairs, highlighted the urgency of improving internet access. He stated, “Brightspeed Fiber Internet is already available to more than 430,000 North Carolina families and businesses, and we're expanding access every day.” This move reflects Brightspeed's commitment to enhancing connectivity in communities that previously lacked reliable internet service.

The funding from North Carolina's Completing Access to Broadband (CAB) program will be supplemented by more than $13 million from Brightspeed's own coffers. The combination of state funding and private investment amounts to approximately $218.6 million, which aims to help connect nearly 99,000 households and businesses across 41 counties.

Pamela Sherwood, Vice President of Brightspeed Broadband, emphasized the critical need for faster and more affordable internet. She remarked, “Expanding access to reliable, user-friendly internet has never been more crucial — whether for work, education, telemedicine, or simply connecting with family and friends.” Brightspeed's ongoing efforts underscore the importance of dependable internet access in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.

In recognition of its superior service, Brightspeed was named the Fastest Internet Service Provider in the country in the 2025 Annual Internet Service Provider Review by HighSpeedInternet.com. Such accolades are a testament to the company's dedication to quality and customer satisfaction.

Brightspeed’s ongoing efforts also include pursuing additional funding from both state and federal programs, such as the BEAD Program, designed to further develop its fiber network. To date, the company has secured over $270 million in local, state, and federal broadband grants, establishing its commitment to facilitate digital equity.

Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Brightspeed operates its network across 20 states, delivering services to over 7.3 million homes and businesses. Their workforce of 4,000 employees demonstrates a shared commitment to a more interconnected future by deploying advanced fiber networks designed for everyday ease of use.
