O-Nexus: A New Era of Innovation in Kansai
On July 2, 2026, a groundbreaking event marked the official launch of O-Nexus, an innovation hub in the heart of Osaka's Nakanoshima. Spearheaded by CIC Japan, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, this hub is set to be a pivotal connector between Kansai and global life sciences. The event, titled "O-Nexus: Osaka Life Science Nexus - THE SHOWCASE -", gathered a diverse group of leaders from government, healthcare, academia, investors, and startups, all championing the life sciences sector. Not only did it serve as a platform to announce the global engagement of the O-Nexus, but it also highlighted its role in fostering new collaborations, business opportunities, and innovation.
The event started with a welcome address from Yoshiki Sawa, Chairman of the Japan Medical Innovation Fund, expressing his optimism about O-Nexus and the support from Nippon Life as a solid foundation for this initiative. "The combination of our efforts here will lead to a thriving ecosystem for education, startup incubation, and funding," he affirmed.
Following this, Osaka’s Mayor, Hideyuki Yokoyama, delivered an inspiring toast in English, highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant business environment. He emphasized the city’s commitment to being a breeding ground for innovation: "With the partnership between Nippon Life and CIC, we are taking a significant step to connect Osaka to the world. I look forward to seeing O-Nexus become a bridge for new ideas and partnerships that enhance lives globally."
Session 1: Connecting Kansai’s Life Science Ecosystem
The first session featured prominent figures in the life sciences field discussing the connectivity of Kansai with global networks. Shigeru Suzuki from Kyoto University, Haruhiko Koike from the Kobe Medical Industry City Development Organization, and Lei Liu from AstraZeneca shared their insights under the moderation of Ayano Kagami from CIC Catalyst APAC. The conversation centered around the region's unique strengths and the potential of collaboration among universities, research institutions, businesses, and government.
Suzuki articulated, "Kansai boasts some of the world's leading foundational research in institutions like Kyoto University and Osaka University. The region has a rich history of pharmaceuticals and a concentration of major corporations. In recent years, we have seen active collaboration to enhance our ecosystem."
Liu added, "There is an inherent strength within academia in Kansai, and O-Nexus presents a new platform for business development. We hope to actively engage at this next level and contribute significantly."
Koike focused on the necessity of funding, underscoring the support for startups to grow globally through investment initiatives.
Session 2: Gateway to Global Innovation
The latter part of the event featured a talk session with Michelle Otte, President of CIC Campuses and Labs, and Timon Rupp, Managing Director of CIC Berlin, moderated by Shino Tsuchiya. They discussed how O-Nexus connects to major global innovation hubs.
Otte remarked, "CIC is more than just a provider of space; it’s an entry point into innovation and global ecosystems. Our labs guide startups to utilize their limited funds effectively, extending operational capital to allow for prolonged research and development. O-Nexus residents should seize all that CIC has to offer."
Rupp elaborated on Berlin's approach to fostering successful startups through infrastructure and governmental cooperation. He shared a success story of a remote control startup that evolved significantly through network connections, emphasizing the intentional design of "positive collisions" that stimulate innovation.
The launch of O-Nexus sets the stage for accelerated innovation linking Osaka to national and global communities. This facility, with a focus on life sciences, aims to support the development of technologies and services contributing to improved public health.
