TeamLab Borderless Reopens with New Exhibition on Asymmetry in Space

TeamLab Borderless, located in Tokyo's Mori Building Digital Art Museum, has officially reopened its iconic installation 'Light Sculpture - Flow' on July 8th. This reopening is not just a routine occasion but marks the beginning of a special exhibition titled 'Asymmetry in Space,' which will run until October 8th. The exhibition showcases two new series titled 'Asymmetric Existence' and 'Chromatic Existence,' adding a fresh dimension to the immersive works that TeamLab is renowned for.

The founder of TeamLab, Toshiyuki Inoko, commented on this reopening, emphasizing that 'Light Sculpture - Flow' creates a space in which beams of light, flowing continuously, manifest as a sculpture within the ordered chaos of the environment. He explained that this sculpture is not a physical object but rather a spatial entity that arises from the flow of light and order, blurring the lines of physical boundaries.

As part of the special exhibition 'Asymmetry in Space,' visitors can delve deeper into two distinct yet interlinked series of artworks. The 'Chromatic Existence' series features flowing colors that spawn a sculpture of light, highlighting how colors can create order in an otherwise chaotic space. The works in this series, including the 'Crystal of the Sky' and 'Dark Existence within Chromatic Order,' challenge our traditional understanding of sculptures by presenting them as fluid, dynamic entities without material boundaries.

On the other hand, the 'Asymmetric Existence' series takes the concept further by presenting one sculpture that exists in two realms: one in the physical space that cannot be reflected in mirrors and another that exists solely within the mirror's reflection. This duality emphasizes the non-symmetrical relationship between real and mirrored space, allowing for an exploration of how these entities can be integrated within the observer's perceptions. The artworks invite viewers to transcend conventional boundaries and engage with the notion of existence in a more profound and interconnected manner.

Each installation within the exhibition is thoughtfully designed to evoke specific feelings and stir the imagination, inviting onlookers to consider the nature of existence. As Inoko points out, existence cannot be separated from our perceptions or the environment. We do not merely observe the world from a distance; instead, we are a part of a continuum that shapes our acknowledgment of existence.

Throughout the exhibition, other compelling pieces can also be experienced, such as 'Flowers and People, Cannot be Controlled but Live Together' and 'Tunnel into the Mirror Universe.' These installations further exemplify TeamLab's dedication to creating experiences that challenge observers to question the boundaries of reality and illusion. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the art physically, moving through the installations and interacting with the constantly evolving light and color that surrounds them.

Located at Azabudai Hills, the TeamLab Borderless museum provides a unique, immersive path where art does not confine itself to walls but moves between spaces, constantly interacting with its environment and audience. It’s more than a collection; it’s an experience that promises constant discovery and exploration within a world devoid of borders.

Additionally, TeamLab Borderless has garnered recognition, having been selected as one of TIME magazine's 'World's Greatest Places 2024.' This accolade speaks volumes about the impact and innovation that the team brings to the art world, setting a benchmark for digital and interactive art experiences globally.

For those wishing to visit, the museum is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with various ticket options available. Adult tickets start at 3,600 yen, and special rates apply for students and children.
