Ayaka Kishimoto: From Rugby Player to Beauty Japan 2026 Finalist

Ayaka Kishimoto: From the Rugby Field to Beauty Queen

Ayaka Kishimoto, a former player for the women's rugby team Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix, has been selected as a finalist for the Beauty Japan 2026 Bay Area competition. This event celebrates not just physical beauty, but also inner strength and career achievements, marking a significant shift in Kishimoto's life and career.

A New Beginning in the Spotlight

Hailing from Kashiwazaki Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Kishimoto began her journey in rugby at the tender age of 14. Her hard work paid off as she became a key player and a beloved member of her team, contributing to three national victories in the 15-a-side format. However, injuries and setbacks challenged her throughout her athletic career. Retiring last season at the age of 27, she now steps into a new role as the head and designer of her fashion brand, Maresta.

With a firm belief in the strength forged from adversity and a deep connection to her roots in Kashiwazaki Island, Kishimoto chose to compete in the Beauty Japan pageant as her next challenge. She sees this as an opportunity to manifest her passion, resilience, and experience in a different arena.

Kishimoto's Reflection on Her Journey

Kishimoto expressed her desire to continue fighting for her place in the world after sports, stating, "During my active years, strength was about conquering myself, but I now feel that true beauty comes from believing in oneself wholeheartedly. On the rugged rugby field and the enchanting stage of Beauty Japan, the common thread is continually facing oneself."

Her gratitude extends to her upbringing in Kashiwazaki Island, the female rugby community that inspired her, and her brand Maresta, which embodies her mission. Kishimoto emphasizes that her transition should not be seen as an end but rather as the beginning of a new chapter where she can share her experiences and become a role model for future female athletes navigating their second careers.

Maresta: Weaving a New Narrative

Maresta, which means "weave" in English, is a brand that Kishimoto devotes herself to. Its concept is "Weave Your Story, Wear Your Honor," inviting individuals to embrace their life stories proudly. Maresta aims to create sportswear and apparel that honor rugby roots and foster collaborations that uplift both local initiatives and communities like Kashiwazaki.

As Kishimoto prepares for the title of Beauty Japan 2026, she remains committed to her brand's vision of empowering others—an extension of what she championed in rugby.
