Texas Continues to Dominate the State-to-State Moving Scene in 2024
According to a recent report by Texas Realtors, Texas has retained its position as a top destination for state-to-state moves, capturing 7.8% of the total national traffic. Despite an overall decline in interstate relocations, the Lone Star State's allure appears undiminished. The report relies on the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey reporting on moves undertaken in 2024.
Overview of Moves to and from Texas
In the race for the highest share of domestic moves, Texas claimed the runner-up position, just behind Florida, which saw an 8% share. Notably, Texas outperformed all others in internal relocations, registering an impressive 3,414,000 people who moved within its own borders, marking an 11% intra-state relocation rate.
Jennifer Wauhob, Chairman of Texas Realtors, attributed this trend to the favorable combination of abundant job opportunities and affordable living conditions, stating, "The data reflects what Texans experience every day: opportunity and a great place to enjoy life."
Migration Patterns
Though the influx of Californians moving to Texas has slowed, California still leads the charge in terms of the number of new residents arriving in Texas. In 2024, approximately 77,000 Californians made the move to Texas, while only 45,000 made the reverse journey, resulting in a net gain of about 32,000 people for Texas from California alone.
Florida also played a significant role in Texas's net migration story. The state sent about 45,000 residents to Texas but welcomed 52,000 in return, which culminated in a net gain of 7,000 individuals from Florida.
However, it’s important to note that Texas experienced outflows to Oklahoma (-9,000), Tennessee (-5,000), and Colorado (-5,000). Even with these losses, Texas still achieved a net gain of around 73,000 residents from various interstate moves.
The Challenges and Opportunities of Moving
Wauhob discussed the challenges that both new arrivals and long-time Texans face when relocating, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with knowledgeable real estate professionals. "Whether you're brand new here or have been a Texan all your life, moving is a challenge. With a Texas Realtor by your side, you know you'll have the expertise, advice, and up-to-the-moment information you need," she added.
