EQT Completes Sale of Melita: Malta's Digital Infrastructure Leader

In a noteworthy move within the telecommunications sector, EQT has successfully finalized the sale of Melita, a prominent digital infrastructure operator based in Malta, to Goldman Sachs Alternatives. Established in 1992, Melita has emerged as the only operator in Malta capable of providing both nationwide gigabit fixed and 5G mobile services. This transaction marks a significant chapter in Melita's journey, bolstered by EQT's strategic investments since its acquisition in 2019.

In recent years, Melita has solidified its position as a leading player in the digital landscape through extensive upgrades and enhancements in its services. The company boasts a fully equipped fiber-powered fixed network and a robust mobile infrastructure, empowering it to offer a comprehensive suite of digital services. These include gigabit broadband, mobile connectivity, premium television offerings, and data center solutions, meeting the diverse needs of both households and businesses across Malta.

EQT's tenure at Melita has been transformational. The company made substantial investments in its network to improve customer experience, ultimately leading to impressive growth metrics. Notably, Melita has embraced innovative technologies, including the development of generative AI tools, to enhance customer support in areas such as billing, sales, and technical queries. This technological leap has significantly enriched customer satisfaction levels and operational efficiency.

Additionally, Melita has successfully ventured into the international market, establishing itself in the rapidly expanding Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity sector. With a proactive, customer-focused approach, Melita has created a proprietary IoT platform that positions it well for growth amidst the burgeoning demand for smart connectivity solutions.

Sustainability has been a cornerstone of Melita's operational philosophy. The company has become the first EQT portfolio company to have its near-term sustainability targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. With initiatives to invest in solar energy to power its operations and an ongoing shift towards electric vehicles, Melita is committed to reducing its environmental footprint. Moreover, the establishment of the Melita Foundation underscores its dedication to community initiatives and social responsibility.

Ulrich Köllensperger, a partner in the EQT Value-Add Infrastructure Advisory team, expressed pride in Melita's progress, particularly its advancements in 5G coverage and fiber network enhancements. According to Köllensperger, the developments in Melita's IoT business signal a promising trajectory, with expansion plans throughout Europe.

Harald Rösch, CEO of Melita, reiterated the company's commitment to growth and innovation, attributing much of its success to EQT's support. He noted that the partnership has fostered transformative changes across all business facets, allowing Melita to emerge as a trailblazer in both gigabit broadband and 5G deployment within the EU. Looking ahead, Rösch voiced enthusiasm for the collaboration with Goldman Sachs Alternatives, with expectations of sustainable growth and further service improvements in Malta's digital ecosystem.

The sale is pending regulatory approvals but is expected to proceed smoothly, given Melita's established market presence and growth potential. As the telecommunications landscape continues to evolve, this deal underscores the increasing value placed on digital infrastructure and connectivity solutions in our increasingly digital world.
