AquaHacking Challenge 2026: Innovating for Our Waters
As issues surrounding water scarcity and quality become increasingly pressing, AquaAction has launched the registration for the AquaHacking Binational Great Lakes and St. Lawrence 2026 Challenge. This initiative seeks to unite students and innovators in addressing crucial water problems faced in the world’s largest freshwater watershed. The call to action was officially announced today in Downtown Detroit during a lively event at the Urban Tech Xchange (UTX), celebrating the 10th anniversary of the AquaHacking program.
The AquaHacking Challenge is a seven-month journey aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among participants from diverse backgrounds. Aspiring innovators will have the chance to develop sustainable solutions to challenges related to water access, quality, and environmental sustainability. With a goal of attracting 1,000 applicants by the registration deadline of April 6, 2026, this edition promises to be the most ambitious yet.
What’s in Store for Participants?
Participants in the AquaHacking Challenge will receive invaluable resources including mentoring from industry experts, technical and legal support, and the opportunity to travel for exposure to real-world applications of their solutions. The program also features a competitive aspect with a total of $70,000 in seed funding up for grabs, including a coveted top prize of $25,000.
Thanks to a robust network of sponsors and partners such as The Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Governors and the St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, there are no registration or participation fees for applicants. This financial accessibility opens the door for many aspiring changemakers, allowing them to focus on creating impactful solutions rather than financial burdens.
Core Focus Areas
The 2026 Challenge is centered around four main water-related issue areas:
1.
Water Access and Community Resilience: This includes finding solutions for equitable water access, managing floods, and creating climate-resilient infrastructure.
2.
Efficient Industry and Energy: Innovators will explore water-efficient cooling methods, hybrid energy systems, and practices that promote water-smart agriculture.
3.
Great Lakes Circular Blue Economy: This focuses on establishing circular water use, innovating in fisheries, and addressing the challenges posed by invasive species.
4.
Water Quality and Ecosystem Health: Participants will work on reducing microplastics and enhancing ecosystem monitoring through advanced data and green infrastructure solutions.
Soula Chronopoulos, President of AquaAction, emphasized the interconnectedness of the Great Lakes with local economies and communities, stating, "Through this program, we’re inviting students and innovators to challenge themselves, build real-world solutions, and help shape the future of freshwater on both sides of the border. This is a life-changing experience for participants!"
Major Support and Partnerships
During the launch event, AquaAction unveiled several key sponsors and partners dedicated to supporting the next generation of water innovators. Notable contributors include Bedrock's Urban Tech Xchange, the Detroit/Wane County Port Authority, and Friends of the Rouge, among others.
