Techo International Airport: Cambodia's New Gateway to the World

Grand Opening of Techo International Airport: A New Dawn for Cambodia

On October 20, 2025, Prime Minister Hun Manet officially opened the Techo International Airport (KTI), a significant landmark that positions Cambodia as a vital hub for travel, trade, and tourism in Southeast Asia. This event was attended by dignitaries from several countries including ambassadors from France, the United States, and Japan, emphasizing the airport's international significance.

A Gateway to the Future

The establishment of KTI marks a transformational moment for Cambodia, which is now set to enhance its status as a global travel destination. Operated by France's VINCI Airports, the new airport is built in collaboration with various partners, including ATKINS and Heerim Architects, and showcases the country's growing connectivity. The project aligns with Cambodia's ambition to expand its tourism and economic footprint in the region.

"Techo International Airport is a testament to Cambodia's progress and will serve as a welcoming point for travelers, reflecting our rich culture and hospitality," stated Pung Kheav Se, Chairman of the Cambodia Airport Investment Co. (CAIC).

Architectural Splendor with Cultural Heritage

Designed by the renowned British firm Foster + Partners, KTI is more than just an airport—it is a celebration of Cambodian heritage. The terminal features Khmer-inspired architecture, with elements such as a towering 9-meter Abhayamudra Buddha statue and over 200 handcrafted stone sculptures by local artisans. The design aims to create an environment that resonates with both locals and international visitors, providing a unique and memorable experience.

Boosting Connectivity and Economic Growth

Currently, the airport boasts operations from 31 airlines across 44 direct routes, facilitating approximately 13,500 passengers daily. This level of connectivity is set to expand further as major international carriers, including Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines, announce new flights to and from major global cities. The airport is also expected to generate around 10,000 jobs, dramatically increasing employment opportunities as compared to the previous airport.

A Catalyst for Tourism

Techo International Airport's opening is more than a logistical achievement; it is poised to invigorate Cambodia's tourism sector. The government is committed to showcasing Cambodia's attractions, including the Royal Palace and Angkor Borei, as well as the natural beauty of its coastal regions and forest retreats. With luxury accommodations such as Rosewood Phnom Penh and Shinta Mani Wild, the airport serves as a tactical launchpad for travelers seeking a blend of comfort and adventure.

"We are dedicated to ensuring that every visitor experiences the warmth of our culture and the splendor of our landscapes," said Minea Kim, CEO of the Cambodia Tourism Board.

Looking Ahead

As KTI prepares to accommodate approximately 13 million passengers annually, it highlights Cambodia's ambitions for the future. The airport isn't just a facility; it embodies a spirit of change and outlook as Cambodia steps into a new era of global engagement and cooperation. With its blend of modern design and cultural authenticity, Techo International Airport stands as a promising beacon for Cambodia's future, welcoming visitors from around the globe and showcasing the best the country has to offer.

The completion of KTI illustrates the successful collaboration between the Cambodian government and international investors, with a vision centered around responsible development that honors the country’s rich heritage while paving the way for economic prosperity. This newly inaugurated airport is not just a gateway to Cambodia, but a symbol of hope and progress in a rapidly changing world.
