Hindustan Zinc Joins ICMM: A New Era for Sustainable Mining

In a significant milestone for the mining industry, Hindustan Zinc Limited has announced that it is the first Indian company to become a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). This landmark achievement reflects not only Hindustan Zinc's commitment to enhancing its sustainable mining practices but also positions India prominently on the global mining map.

What is ICMM?

The ICMM is a consortium consisting of 25 of the world's leading mining and metals companies committed to sustainable development. This organization aims to promote ethical conduct, transparency, and responsible mining practices across its member organizations and the industry at large. Hindustan Zinc's entry into this esteemed group highlights its dedication to these principles and its intention to contribute positively to the global mining sector.

A Rigorous Evaluation Process

Becoming a member of the ICMM is no small feat. Hindustan Zinc underwent a stringent independent evaluation process to secure its membership. This evaluation was conducted by experts and required approval from the ICMM Council based on these recommendations. Hindustan Zinc is the first new member welcomed into the fold since 2021, underscoring its distinguished status in the industry.

Commitment to Sustainable Guidelines

By joining ICMM, Hindustan Zinc has committed itself to adhere to 40 performance criteria set by the council, which cover essential standards in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. It also involves third-party validation for its assets. This membership not only bolsters Hindustan Zinc's sustainability leadership but also enables collaboration with global peers on climate action, circular economy, biodiversity, and inclusivity.

Leadership Perspectives

Arun Misra, the CEO of Hindustan Zinc, expressed that this achievement is both an honor and a significant responsibility. He stated, “This step marks a new chapter in our sustainable development journey 2.0, based on transparency, innovation, and global best practices. For us, sustainability and good business go hand in hand, making it strategically imperative to create a lasting, positive impact on our environment and communities.”

Hindustan Zinc’s initiatives are expected to provide valuable insights into sustainable mining, contributing to a safer and more responsible future for mining practices worldwide.

Welcoming Remarks from ICMM

When announcing Hindustan Zinc's membership, Rohitesh Dhawan, CEO of ICMM, welcomed the company as the first Indian member and stated that their inclusion reinforces the collective commitment to responsible mining. He emphasized the increasing importance of India's role in the global mining and metallurgical industry and highlighted how Hindustan Zinc’s leadership in sustainable practices would enrich the council's work in fostering a safer, more sustainable mining future.

Acknowledgement and Global Recognition

Hindustan Zinc has received global recognition for its exceptional leadership in ESG practices. Notably, in 2024, it was ranked the most sustainable mining and metals company globally by the SP Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment for two consecutive years. The company has set ambitious sustainable goals aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner, demonstrating its vision for a sustainable and responsible mining operation.

This strategic alignment with the ICMM marks a pivotal point in Hindustan Zinc's journey toward a sustainable future, inspiring other industry players to follow suit and emphasizing the significance of collective action in addressing global environmental challenges.
