The survey, coordinated by Green Tech Valley in collaboration with various partners, highlights key players such as the AplusB centers, Austrian Startups, and the Climate and Energy Fund. These organizations have undertaken a meticulous selection process, identifying startups that specialize in sustainability technologies, ensuring they are less than a decade old. Notably, 29 new entrants joined the ranks while 16 were eliminated primarily due to their age.

In a striking turn of events, digital tech has emerged as the leading sector within the green startup landscape, surpassing the energy sector for the first time, accounting for 35% of the startups, while the energy sector holds 31%. Other sectors contributing to this growth include building technologies (14%) and innovations in circular and biotech food (10% each).

The hubs of entrepreneurial activity remain concentrated in urban areas like Vienna, Graz, and Leoben, thanks to the proximity of technical universities which serve as breeding grounds for innovation. Graz, in particular, has become a hotspot, fostering a supportive ecosystem that nurtures green startups through initiatives like the Green Startupmark.

A significant insight from the survey indicates that 52% of the startups prioritize collaborations with industry partners, a shift from previous years where funding was the primary concern. This evolution highlights a broader trend where startups are looking for more tangible support, including matchmaking opportunities with established companies and access to subsidies and financing.

Innovations Shaping the Future

Among the standout innovations by these startups is BauBlocks, which has developed a reusable building block that integrates all essential wall components. Duramea produces hydrogen membranes for electrolysis and fuel cells, while PulpStack is revolutionizing 3D printing by enabling cellulose to be used industrially. Notably, HASHLYNK focuses on converting excess renewable energy into practical computing power and heat. Other noteworthy startups include PureSurf, focused on green chemistry, and Yflavour, which specializes in plant-based flavors.

These advancements not only showcase the creativity and ingenuity of Austria's green tech startups but also underline their commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Furthermore, established startups are finding success too; for instance, Fiber Elements, which extracts fibers from volcanic basalt rock for high-performance construction materials, recently secured €2.6 million from private investments, propelling their operations forward.
