Convoy of Hope Broadens its Summer Feeding Efforts to Combat Child Hunger

In America, discussions about hunger often center around the holiday season, but for many families, the real struggle begins when schools break for summer. With the end of the academic year, crucial school meal programs vanish, leaving a devastating gap that affects millions of children. The latest statistics are alarming: over 20 million children in the United States face food insecurity during the summer months as the dependable meals they receive at school abruptly disappear.

"During the school year, meals are provided. Then there's this gap," notes a local program coordinator, echoing the sentiments of many families during this challenging time. This sentiment is echoed by countless parents who know all too well the brutal reality of having to choose between paying for rent and putting food on the table. Families from both rural and urban communities find themselves struggling financially, with many living paycheck to paycheck.

For instance, a mother receiving assistance candidly recalls her experiences: "We’ve gone through times when all we had was macaroni noodles, and I had to make spaghetti sauce using ketchup packets. Being in that position is truly heartbreaking. When someone comes along, offering us support, it truly changes everything for us."

In response to this urgent need, the Convoy of Hope has significantly expanded its U.S. Children's Summer Feeding Initiative this summer. By leveraging a nationwide network of local churches, schools, and community partners, the organization aims to fill the critical gap before families reach a breaking point. Hal Donaldson, president of Convoy of Hope, emphasizes that these moments of hardship for families can be transformational. He states, "When people experience challenges, it is an opportunity for kindness to shine through. Our efforts can make a significant difference in their outlook, providing them with hope for better days ahead."

The expansion is evident in the program's remarkable growth; the initiative served over 152,000 children in 2025 through 219 partner organizations across seven states. This year, the Convoy of Hope is set to nearly double its operational capacity, reaching a staggering 200,000 children through 420 distribution partners at 60 regional hubs. This growth signifies not just an increase in numbers but also a greater acknowledgment of the pressing needs that exist in communities across the nation.

To ensure that children receive the assistance they desperately need, Convoy of Hope's extensive network delivers truckloads of groceries weekly to partner organizations. Each shipment includes essential shelf-stable food, nutritional fruits and vegetables, proteins, and other staples designed to provide children and families with healthy meal options.

A coordinator from a local church expressed the impact of this support succinctly: "Our church is small, and without the help and supplies from Convoy, we wouldn't be able to assist families at all. Thanks to this program, children now receive a bag filled with nutritious food each week. Seeing their smiles when they collect their food is heartwarming. It’s all about reaching out and showing support to those in need."

As the program seeks to sustain and broaden its outreach, Convoy of Hope encourages community members and organizations alike to contribute to combating summer hunger.
