Consumers Energy and GeoForce Enhance Pole Inspection Program to Strengthen Michigan's Electric Grid

Consumers Energy is taking significant strides to bolster the integrity of Michigan's electric grid through an extensive expansion of its pole inspection program.

In a decisive move, the company has announced an ambitious 150% increase in its proactive infrastructure inspection approach, aiming to inspect over 125,000 utility poles. This program is projected to deliver nearly $24 million in cost savings for customers in 2026 alone.

This expansion is a direct response to the insights gained from inspections conducted in the second half of 2025, where over 50,000 utility poles were checked. This earlier initiative was instrumental in identifying 70 poles that needed immediate attention, along with 3,640 poles that required near-term upgrades. The primary goal of these inspections is to rectify minor issues before they escalate into major problems, which often lead to costly emergency repairs, widespread outages, or prolonged service interruptions.

Chris Fultz, the Vice President of Low Voltage Distribution at Consumers Energy, stated, "We're proud of the meaningful progress we're making to help secure the grid across the communities we serve. Fixing small problems early leads to fewer power outages and emergency repairs, ensuring that our service is more reliable and ultimately saves money for our customers."

The collaboration with GeoForce Utility Technologies is pivotal in this undertaking. Known for their professional expertise in pole inspection and treatment services, GeoForce employs teams that conduct detailed groundline inspections—focusing on areas where decay and weathering are most likely to occur. These inspections are crucial as they allow the identification and remediation of potential failures before they necessitate expensive emergency services.

He remarked, "Groundline inspections identify issues early, long before they turn into outages or expensive emergency repairs. This scaled, data-driven program not only strengthens system security but also saves customers money over time."
