The Current State of Japanese Cuisine in London and 'The Village' Concept
On April 15, 2026, the Glocal Business Seminar vol.34 will be held in a hybrid format, showcasing insights into Japanese cuisine in London. The event will feature Tetsuro Hama, the chairperson of the NPO 'The Village', who will discuss the evolution of Japanese food culture in London and the innovative concept of 'The Village'.
The Rise of Japanese Cuisine in London
Tetsuro Hama has been a pivotal figure in promoting Japanese cuisine in London for many years. Arriving in the UK in the 1970s, when there were only a handful of Japanese restaurants, he opened his own establishment, laying the groundwork for the widespread acceptance of Japanese food in British society.
His contributions extended beyond the restaurant business into culinary education and community building. He has continuously engaged in multi-faceted activities aimed at fostering cultural exchange between Japan and the UK. In recognition of his dedication to the promotion of Japanese cuisine abroad, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays in fall 2024.
The Seminar Focus
This seminar will cover numerous points of interest, blending Hama's personal journey with broader themes of change within Japanese food culture. He will address historical developments from the early days of Japanese cuisine abroad to the present, focusing particularly on the transitions facing the first generation of Japanese expatriates.
One of the main topics will be the concept of 'The Village', which Hama envisions as a new community structure that represents the future of Japanese food culture overseas. As Japanese food continues to gain acceptance worldwide, it raises important questions: What legacy will we leave, and how will we connect the generations that follow?
Attendees can expect a rich dialogue touching on the nuances of cultural, generational, and community legacies—that go beyond mere market expansion—to delve into the essence of glocal business. This seminar is especially relevant for anyone interested in international expansion, as well as those who wish to develop businesses or communities centered around culture.
