NABP's Pulse Product Verification Service Gains Traction Among Regulators in Over 20 States

NABP's Pulse Product Verification Service: A Step Forward in Pharmacy Safety

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) has made significant strides in ensuring the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain with its Pulse by NABP™ Product Verification Service (PVS). This innovative service has recently been adopted by regulators across more than 20 states, including notable inclusion by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). This development is geared towards identifying potential fraudulent products in the pharmacy supply chain and aims to enhance the overall safety and transparency for consumers.

What is Pulse PVS?

Pulse PVS allows authorized trading partners and regulators to swiftly conduct verification requests as mandated by the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). The process is straightforward—upon scanning a product, users receive a prompt response indicating if the product identifier is verified, not verified, or if further investigation is required due to an error.

The immediate effectiveness of Pulse PVS was clearly demonstrated shortly after its implementation. In January 2025, the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy utilized this tool to verify the legitimacy of a product thought to be Ozempic®. With just a mobile scan, an inspector could ascertain that the product quarantined at a local pharmacy was indeed illegitimate. The findings prompted the Arkansas Board to take swift action, initiating an investigation and subsequently suspending the seller's license, effectively safeguarding public health.
