Sustainable Food Asia Joins Science Castle 2025 as Supporting Partner

Sustainable Food Asia (SFA) took part as a supporting partner in the prestigious "SCIENCE CASTLE in Malaysia 2025", held on July 31, 2025, at Makeramai Makerspace in Kuching, Malaysia. Organized by Leave a Nest, the event saw the participation of around 470 students, where youth researchers presented their findings in various fields, including biology, chemistry, engineering, and environmental science.

The SCIENCE CASTLE platform enables high school students engaged in research to discover and deepen their questions and share them with society. Initiated by Leave a Nest in Japan in 2012, this notable conference has expanded across Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, fostering cross-border research exchanges.

At the event, diverse research teams from Malaysian high schools showcased their projects, centered on the theme of addressing societal challenges through science and technology. Topics covered included food waste, insect-based food, regional resource utilization, environmental conservation, and biodiversity. These projects aimed to connect local issues with scientific solutions, allowing teams to explore unique perspectives towards problem-solving.

The collaborative environment attracted students, educators, industry professionals, and researchers from universities, encouraging not only exhibitions but also interactive sessions, feedback through presentations, and workshops that facilitated an international learning and sharing atmosphere.

SFA identified the SMK Lingga team as notable for addressing social issues surrounding food in their poster presentation. Their innovative proposal involved upcycling okara into nutritious muffins, demonstrating creativity in tackling food sustainability issues.

In addition to the poster sessions, the oral presentations highlighted outstanding research, with the SM Sains Kuching team proudly receiving the Leave a Nest GRAND AWARD for their exceptional work. SFA is committed to continuing energetic engagement with the next generation by providing dialogue and practical avenues centered on exploring “the possibilities of food,” as they strive for a sustainable society.
