Discover the Sweet Truth of Fair Trade Chocolate
On February 5, from 10:30 AM to 12:45 PM, a remarkable cooking event will take place in Kai City, Yamanashi, hosted by the Pal System Yamanashi Nagano Cooperative. This event promises an enlightening experience focusing on the world of chocolate, particularly the dark realities faced by cocoa bean producers in developing countries.
The workshop is themed
“The Sweet Chocolate’s Unsweetened Reality”, aiming to raise awareness about the harsh labor conditions many cocoa farmers endure, often leading to them never tasting the very chocolate they produce. As participants engage in creating decadent sweets such as gâteau au chocolat and chocolate pudding, they will also delve into the stories and struggles of these producers, navigating the disconnect between the delightful taste of chocolate and the labor that goes into it.
One objective of this workshop is to educate attendees about
fair trade practices. Fair trade is a system that creates job opportunities for vulnerable producers and ensures they receive fair compensation for their efforts. All treats will be prepared using fair trade chocolate, emphasizing the importance of supporting sustainable practices. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy four delightful recipes, including:
- - Gâteau au chocolat
- - Chocolate pudding
- - Baked chocolate
- - Mango dipped in chocolate
All prepared with organic ingredients and cocoa butter, attendees can savor these sweet delights while engaging in enriching conversations about fair trade and sustainability.
The event will be led by members of the Fair Trade Supporters group, which consists of Pal System users. They aim to deliver engaging and comprehensible information about eco-friendly production methods while highlighting sustainable practices through food. Their motto, “deliciously, enjoyably, and understandably,” resonates throughout the workshop, ensuring participants leave with both practical knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the efforts behind their favorite sweet treats.
