Kidzania Tokyo Hosts Unconscious Bias Week
Kidzania Tokyo, a unique children's role-playing facility, will be hosting its fourth annual 'Unconscious Bias Week' from September 18 to 24, 2026. This program, supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Bureau of Lifestyle and Cultural Affairs, aims to raise awareness among young participants about their own unconscious biases through engaging activities and workshops.
Understanding Unconscious Bias
Unconscious bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that unconsciously affect our understanding, actions, and decisions. It can lead to assumptions about people and situations based on incomplete information. During this week-long event, children will participate in interactive workshops and quiz rallies designed to help them understand the concept of unconscious bias and reflect on their own ingrained beliefs.
In the workshops, children will learn about unconscious bias, explore their future aspirations, and create a 'Challenge Card'—a personalized card where they can declare their goals and thoughts regarding their future careers. Additionally, a quiz rally will be set up throughout the facility, with three stations featuring quizzes related to unconscious bias for families to engage in together. Participants who answer all the questions correctly will receive exclusive original merchandise.
The need for such an event has been highlighted by a survey released by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in March 2026, revealing that while nearly half of the respondents recognized the term 'unconscious bias,' over 80% believed that certain jobs were more suited for one gender over another. This demonstrates the ongoing prevalence of biases in society and emphasizes the importance of addressing these assumptions early on, especially among the younger generation.
KCJ GROUP, the operator of Kidzania since its opening in October 2006, has consistently strived to create an inclusive environment where children of all genders and backgrounds can explore various occupations and services based on their interests. The organization hopes that events like Unconscious Bias Week will help children recognize their own biases, opening doors for them to pursue their dreams and potentials more freely.
