The Vision Behind 9PROJECT
Founded by members mentored by the late Tsuka Kohei, 9PROJECT has gained a reputation for staging many of Kohei's works from the 1970s and 1980s. This forthcoming production will mark the 24th performance of the group, focusing on 'Strippers' Story,' a play often mentioned alongside classics such as 'Kamata Koshinkyoku' and 'Atami Murder Case.' With each rendition, 'Strippers' Story' has evolved, showcasing its versatility and depth. Kohei himself declared this particular work as something that could not be adapted into print, emphasizing its unique ability to convey emotion through physicality.
A Rare Opportunity
The version being presented dates back to 1982, starring the acclaimed Kunihei Tanaka and Toshiko Negishi, and has become almost mythical, rarely performed in recent years. This revival intends to present the play authentically, without any alterations, allowing audiences to experience Kohei's original writing firsthand.
Director's Reflection
Director Kazutaka Watanabe shares insights on the significance of this performance. He recalls selecting the piece for their inaugural show in 2014, when they felt challenged to approach earlier works from Kohei's repertoire. He notes the initial shock of navigating the absurdist themes present in Kohei's earlier plays compared to the more structured narratives from the 2000s. Watanabe expresses that the rehearsal process for 'Strippers' Story' was intense, requiring thorough analysis and understanding of Kohei's language. Despite its complexity, the script began to resonate as the actors imbued it with their emotions, creating a profound connection to the original work. He believes that after seven years and numerous productions, they can bring fresh insights to this foundational piece of their artistic journey.
A Powerful Narrative
The story centers on Akemi, a once-prominent stripper facing the decline of her dance career, marked by scars from a recent surgery that rendered her unable to bear children. Haunted by her past dreams of performing on Broadway, she is now confronted with the harsh realities of life. Meanwhile, her lackluster relationship with her boyfriend, Shige, adds to her turmoil. Just when things seem bleak, a young girl named Michiko appears, admiring Akemi from the shadows of the theater. She expresses her own dreams of going to America to pursue dance, reflecting the youth and aspiration that Akemi once possessed. As she engages with Michiko, Akemi starts to see fragments of her former self in this hopeful young dancer.
