Innovative Remote Control for Heatstroke Prevention Advances to Tokyo Competition
In a significant milestone, the ReReCo® (リリコ), developed by Brown Laboratory based in Kasukabe, Saitama, has made it through the first screening stage of the Tokyo Heatstroke Equipment Contest, co-hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Environment Public Corporation. Out of 113 entries, ReReCo was selected as a candidate in the “Measurement and Monitoring Category.” The second screening, which will occur from May 8 to 10, 2026, will involve public voting via the Tokyo official app.
Growing Risks of Heatstroke with Rising Temperatures
The risk of heatstroke is a pressing concern, particularly in light of the alarming statistics released by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. In 2025, the number of emergency transport cases related to heatstroke surpassed 100,000 for the first time since records began, with residences being the highest occurrence location at 38%. This alarming trend sheds light on the fact that homes can be more hazardous than outdoor environments.
What is even more concerning is that approximately 90% of heatstroke fatalities among the elderly occur at home, primarily due to the lack of air conditioning. Many seniors ignore the heat due to diminished sensitivity and the misconceptions that air conditioning is harmful or unnecessarily costly. As we face forecasts of rising temperatures as early as summer 2026, proactive measures to combat heatstroke at home are urgently required.
Features of the Life-Supporting ReReCo®
The ReReCo® is a unique “monitoring remote control” that learns signals from existing air conditioner remotes and automatically activates the air conditioner when room temperatures exceed a preset threshold. Unlike conventional smart remotes, it operates entirely without Wi-Fi, smartphones, or PCs, making it incredibly accessible for elderly users. The installation process takes merely three seconds with just two button presses, ensuring simplicity for those unfamiliar with technology.
Key Features Include:
- - Temperature Sensor: Activates air conditioning automatically when the preset temperature is crossed.
- - 24/7 Monitoring: Continuously checks the room temperature every five minutes.
- - Auto Recovery Post-Power Outage: Restart air conditioning automatically when power is restored.
- - Wi-Fi and Smartphone Independent: Functions without any internet connection.
- - Three-Second Installation: Quick setup with no need for wiring.
- - No Battery Changes Required for One Season: Operates on a 2800mAh AA battery.
- - Compatible with All Manufacturers: Supports infrared pulse copying for essentially all home air conditioners.
The ReReCo® comes in four stylish colors: white, green, pink, and black.
How to Use ReReCo®: Simple Steps to Safety
1.
Learn: Bring the existing remote close to the ReReCo® and press the cooling button to learn the signal (takes about 3 seconds).
2.
Monitor: Place it where the AC receiver is visible— it autonomously checks the temperature every five minutes.
3.
Activate: When the temperature rises above the preset level, it turns the air conditioning on automatically, ensuring comfort and safety even if manually turned off.
Development Background: A Response to Tragedy
Brown Laboratory’s inventor, Yukiyoshi Nagasawa, has been involved in handyman services since 2003 and has encountered numerous cases of elder fatalities due to isolation and heatstroke. A turning point for him was the loss of a longtime acquaintance, an elderly woman who was found dead after succumbing to heatstroke while solely relying on a fan during a particularly harsh summer. Her belief that “Air conditioning wasn’t a necessity” became a haunting reminder of the potential consequences of such misconceptions.
This experience catalyzed the ReReCo®’s creation, driven by the desire to prevent similar tragedies and provide peace of mind for families. After nearly eight years of development, it emerged in 2025, fulfilling a mission beyond mere convenience—its very name signifies “Remote: Distance, Relief: Assistance, Control: Operation.” It aims to transform into a reliable partner that fosters a safe living environment for everyone.
About the Tokyo Heatstroke Equipment Contest
This contest, showcased on the Tokyo Heatstroke Prevention Portal, was launched as part of the “Tokyo 2050 Strategy” focused on executing effective measures against heatstroke. It offers manufacturers a platform to present their outstanding heat prevention products, undergoing expert evaluation and public voting before winners are declared in this pioneering effort.
Having successfully passed the first stage, ReReCo® is now set to stand among its peers in the upcoming second screening around May 8-10, 2026. Attendees are encouraged to experience the product in person during the voting event, supporting innovations aimed at protecting lives from heat-related risks.
Event Details:
- - Date: May 8 (Fri) - May 10 (Sun), 2026
- - Location: Shinjuku and Hachioji venues (live product demonstrations available)
- - Voting: Via the Tokyo official app, “Tokyo iSMART Life.”
