Searching for Young Artists: Apply Now for Tokyo's START Box Creative Spaces!

Calling Young Artists in Tokyo: Apply for START Box!

The Tokyo Arts Council, in collaboration with the Tokyo Historical and Cultural Foundation, has launched an exciting opportunity for emerging artists. The START Box initiative aims to support young creators who face challenges in securing studio spaces. This innovative program not only provides a place for artists to create but also fosters ongoing artistic activities.

What is START Box?

The START Box program is designed to offer affordable studios in unused public housing and retail spaces throughout Tokyo. This initiative will soon include a new shared studio called START Box Sakashita, located in Itabashi-ku's Sakashita area. This unique space features an open layout without doors, promoting collaboration and interaction among artists while providing an environment suitable for working on large-scale artworks.

In addition to START Box Sakashita, two other locations—START Box Sasahatatsu and START Box Shirohige—are also accepting applications from artists starting in October. Each studio space is available at reasonable rates, making it an excellent opportunity for those in the arts.

Application Details

The application window runs from 14:00 on June 29, 2026 to 12:00 on July 27, 2026. Interested candidates must meet the following criteria:
  • - Must require a location for creative activities.
  • - Aged between 18 and around 40 years.
  • - Resident, employed, or graduated from a school in Tokyo.

To apply, applicants should refer to the START Box official website and submit their entries online. The selection process will be based on the submitted documentation, and all applicants will receive notifications regarding the results by the end of August 2026.

A Positive Impact on the Community

Since its inception, the START Box initiative has already benefited a total of 81 artists and 19 groups in various performing arts disciplines. Many have successfully transitioned to international platforms, showcasing their works in exhibitions and competitions around the globe. The program not only promotes local talent but also nurtures the next wave of artists who may one day shape the global art landscape.

Future Development

Planned expansions of the START Box include the START Box Odaiba, which is set for a future call in the fiscal year 2026. Participants looking for information on available locations are encouraged to consistently monitor the START Box official website or follow their press releases for the latest updates.

Are you a young artist seeking the right creative environment? This is an exciting opportunity to apply to the START Box initiative and become a part of Tokyo’s vibrant art community! Don’t forget to complete your application by the July 27, 2026 deadline.
