Transforming Amazon Biodiversity into Business

The Institute for Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Amazon (Idesam) has recently initiated a groundbreaking global challenge aimed at turning the rich biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest into practical, impact-oriented business models. This significant initiative, known as the Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge, is now open for applications until June 30, 2026. It invites innovative thinkers and research and development (R&D) professionals to propose solutions that blend advanced scientific techniques with traditional ecological knowledge.

Aiming for Real-World Solutions

According to Paulo Simonetti, the Leader in Open Innovation and ESG at Idesam, the challenge focuses on transforming scientific understanding into practical solutions that keep the rainforest intact while also fostering sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. With the Amazon being one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, the initiative underscores the importance of balancing conservation efforts with economic growth.

Participants will have the chance to contribute to six critical focus areas, including the utilization of native rubber for biomaterials, the innovative processing of açaí byproducts, and the exploration of various Amazonian oils such as andiroba, copaíba, and buriti. By innovating in these areas, the initiative looks to enhance eco-friendly product development while providing significant environmental benefits.

Financial Support and Opportunities

Idesam plans to select 25 R&D professionals and 25 innovators who will be divided into teams. The most promising ten teams will embark on a 15-day immersive residency in the Amazon rainforest, where they will engage in practical activities in Manaus and adjacent communities. All expenses for this residency will be covered, giving participants a unique opportunity to integrate their knowledge with the local ecosystem.

Selected participants will not only receive financial support but also have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. Monthly grants of $650 to $1,300 will be available for six months, alongside an approximate funding of $20,000 per team for research testing and validation. In the end, three teams will be awarded prizes ranging from $20,000 to $40,000, along with continuous support for business development, legal advice, and networking opportunities with potential investors.
