FANCL's Nagomi Time Event: A Day of Comfort and Care for Cancer Patients
On March 14, 2026, FANCL held a special event titled "Nagomi time 縁日 – here to calm your mind and body –" at the Bellesalle Ariake Conference Center in Koto Ward, Tokyo. Designed for cancer patients, their families, and healthcare professionals, the event gathered approximately 100 attendees to foster learning, experience, and connection around the theme of Appearance Care, which addresses the physical changes that can accompany cancer treatment.
The Background of the Event
In recent years, advancements in cancer treatment have led to an era where living while undergoing treatment is more common. Consequently, the focus on enhancing the quality of life (QOL) for patients has become increasingly vital. Appearance care extends beyond mere physical appearance; it plays a crucial supportive role in enabling patients to live authentically while remaining connected to society.
FANCL organized this event in collaboration with the Ariake Hospital Cancer Research Institute, combining medical insights, easy-to-adopt self-care practices, and opportunities for participants to interact with one another. The aim was to provide firsthand experience in a nurturing environment.
Highlights from the Day
Special Talk Session Featuring Anna Umemiya
A special talk session featured talent Anna Umemiya, who shared her personal journey through cancer. Reflecting on her experience, she remarked, "Life looked significantly different after my diagnosis. My daughter told me, 'You’ve become so much kinder.'"
She expressed her desire to impart her personal experiences positively, saying, "Every day, new individuals receive a cancer diagnosis. By sharing what I’ve learned, I hope to support someone else. I want my journey with cancer to mean something valuable in life."
Medical professionals from the Ariake Hospital also participated in the dialogue, discussing environmental factors surrounding cancer patients and the significance of support. Miho Nakamura, head nurse at the Total Care Center, emphasized the importance of early detection: "If detected promptly, there may be a chance that hair loss can be avoided. Therefore, early screenings are crucial."
Dr. Akemi Kataoka, head of the Breast Surgery Department, encouraged attendees to share the knowledge they gained at home: "It’s vital to spread accurate information in society."
Interactive Programs that Brought Smiles
The stage featured a makeup demonstration by beauty journalist Takako Yamazaki. Working with Miho Suzuki, co-representative director of the Non-Profit Organization Maggies Tokyo, she presented makeup tips to create an energetic appearance in a short time. Attendees eagerly took notes and engaged with Yamazaki’s practical, easy-to-implement techniques for daily life.
Following the makeup session, cancer-specialized fitness instructor Rika Murakami led a “Relaxed Dance Workout.” This inclusive, music-driven program allowed participants to move together, which created a joyful atmosphere filled with smiles, helping relieve tension and unite everyone in a warm environment.
Varied Experience Booths Focusing on Self-Care
Alongside the stage events, various experience booths were set up by partnering companies, providing hands-on learning about self-care in daily life. At FANCL’s booth, participants received lessons in makeup techniques tailored to support changing appearances. This enabled attendees to discover helpful tips for their everyday lives.
The event facilitated natural interactions among participants, as they joyfully conversed and moved through the booths together.
