Ascend Elements and GEM Form Partnership to Enhance Battery Recycling Efforts in Europe

Ascend Elements, a prominent American player in battery engineering materials, has announced a strategic partnership with GEM Co., Ltd., a pioneering Chinese company in battery materials and recycling. This collaboration aims to explore innovative ways to enhance battery recycling processes and engage in joint production of engineering materials specifically for lithium-ion batteries in Europe.

Signed on September 17, 2025, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reflects the commitment of both companies to work together in creating a sustainable battery materials ecosystem within the European market. Their efforts align with the European Union's regulatory framework, which includes initiatives like the EU Battery Regulations and the EU Battery Passport, all prioritizing recyclability and traceability, alongside increased use of recycled materials in new lithium-ion batteries.

The MOU establishes a structured collaboration framework that leverages GEM’s extensive background in recycling and mass production of metals with Ascend Elements’ operational and commercial expertise in Europe. The primary goal is to develop a cutting-edge network dedicated to lithium-ion battery recycling, recovery of critical minerals, and production of engineering materials within the region. This initiative will lead to the creation of a local and circular supply chain designed to meet market demands while adhering to stringent regulatory requirements.

Professor Xu Kaihua, Chairman of GEM, remarked, "This collaboration signifies a major milestone in realizing GEM's vision for a greener and more sustainable future. Together, we aim to drive innovation in battery recycling and the production of engineered materials, thus establishing an industrial ecosystem in Europe that supports emergent regulatory and market needs for recyclable and traceable batteries."

Linh Austin, CEO of Ascend Elements, added, "Partnering with GEM significantly reduces the risks associated with our ambitious strategies in Europe. Their proficiency in mass production empowers us to accelerate our capabilities to deliver the necessary services that the European market currently lacks. We are committed to forming an integrated battery industry ecosystem that addresses both sustainability and regulatory imperatives while propelling the energy transition and supporting economic value."

Founded in 2015, Ascend Elements is recognized as a leading supplier of critical domestic minerals and engineered materials for lithium-ion batteries, with its sustainable practices focusing on recycling battery materials to produce Li₂CO₃ and pCAM. On the other side, GEM Co., Ltd., established in 2001 by Professor Xu, has emerged as a frontrunner in China's circular economy and a global leader in waste recycling as well as in the tungsten carbide and new energy industries.

This partnership not only promises to bolster the recycling infrastructure within Europe but also reflects an increasing trend of collaboration between Western and Eastern entities aiming for shared environmental goals and technological progress. As both companies join forces, they are set to make significant contributions towards a sustainable and innovative battery materials industry in Europe, paving the way for future advancements in battery technology and environmental stewardship.
