Cariflex Launches the Largest Polyisoprene Latex Plant Worldwide in Singapore
Cariflex Pte. Ltd. has officially unveiled a new state-of-the-art polyisoprene latex manufacturing facility at Jurong Island, Singapore. This monumental investment of approximately $355 million makes it the largest plant of its kind on a global scale, aimed at significantly boosting production capacity to cater to the increasing demand for synthetic latex, particularly in medical and protective applications.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Dr. Tan See Leng, Singapore's Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, alongside several dignitaries, including H.E. Hong Jin Wook, Ambassador of South Korea, and executives from Cariflex and its parent company, DL Chemical. With this new facility, Cariflex solidifies its leadership position in the polyisoprene latex market, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing its manufacturing capabilities in key regions.
Expanding Manufacturing Network
The new plant, covering an impressive 6.1 hectares, is strategically positioned to serve the Southeast Asian market, an area crucial for the production of surgical gloves and condoms. Cariflex has enjoyed a steady expansion over the past 20 years, with previous investments in Brazil and Japan, including a recent expansion in Paulinia, Brazil, amounting to $50 million. The Singapore facility not only broadens the scope of Cariflex's offerings but also supports the increasing market demand for various applications, including non-surgical medical gloves and adhesives.
Mr. Ryu Sang Woo, CEO of Cariflex, stated, “We have strategically located our new facility here in Singapore, at the doorstep of our key customers. The country’s dynamic financial landscape, innovation-driven environment, and skilled workforce made it the ideal choice for our investment.” By ensuring a reliable supply of high-quality materials, the plant will cater to both current and anticipated future demands, effectively doubling Cariflex’s latex production capacity.
Investing in Local Talent
The opening of the new factory aligns with Singapore's initiative to foster high-value industries providing meaningful employment opportunities for its citizens. The facility has created around 80 new permanent jobs predominantly occupied by Singaporeans. Cariflex is dedicated to nurturing its workforce through comprehensive training programs conducted at its Brazilian operations and other DL Chemical sites across Korea, focusing on areas like operational safety and digital system integration.
Cariflex is devoted to supporting career advancement for its employees, including mentorship opportunities for those without university degrees, thus reinforcing their long-term commitment to fostering local talent.
A Strategic Move for Regional Demand
In 2020, Cariflex shifted its global headquarters to Singapore to enhance the alignment of its commercial and manufacturing operations. The company stands out in the market as it is the only manufacturer of anionic catalyst-based synthetic rubber and latex known for its exceptional purity, transparency, and softness. This newly inaugurated plant not only bolsters Cariflex's manufacturing network but also positions it to better meet the increasing demands of the Southeast Asian market and beyond.
Overall, this development represents a significant milestone not just for Cariflex, but also for the industrial growth and innovation landscape in Singapore, effectively contributing to the country's status as a hub for high-tech manufacturing and specialized production.
