Teamsters Achieve Significant Contract Gains in Historic Vote for Air Express International Workers

Teamsters Overwhelmingly Ratify New Contract
On January 29, 2025, over 500 Teamsters working for Air Express International (AEI), a subsidiary of global shipping leader DHL, voted decisively to ratify a new four-year contract. Their approval came with a remarkable 95% in favor, reflecting strong support for the improvements included in the agreement.

The new contract introduces an immediate hourly wage increase of $2.50, which is set to rise to a total increase of $6.00 over the four-year span. In addition, the agreement boosts company contributions to health care and pension plans by $1 per hour. Notably, AEI Teamsters have secured an uncapped cost-of-living adjustment for the first time, ensuring that their wages will better keep up with inflation and living costs.

Bill Hamilton, the Director of the Teamsters Express Division and Vice President for the Eastern Region, expressed gratitude towards the negotiating committee and the workers. He emphasized the significance of the new contract, stating, “AEI Teamsters fought hard and won a contract that delivers real raises, real protections, and real respect.”

Negotiations commenced in December 2024, with a tentative agreement reached shortly before the expiration of the previous contract on December 31. The new contract not only offers substantial increases in pay but also improves job security and working conditions for the Teamsters. For instance, recall rights have been extended from three years to five years, giving workers more security in the event of layoffs. Additionally, employees retained their rights to challenge any technological changes the company plans to implement.

Moreover, the agreement recognizes Juneteenth as a paid holiday, further emphasizing the commitment to employee welfare and cultural recognition. Previous contracts did not afford these rights, making this accomplishment even more significant. Jake Scaramuzi from Teamsters Local 705, who participated in the negotiations, expressed his enthusiasm for the outcomes. “As excited as I am about higher pay and benefits, we also gained many rights that we previously did not have. This is the best contract we've had in years,” he commented.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, founded in 1903, now represents 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, advocating for their rights and improvements in workplace conditions. This recent victory for AEI Teamsters highlights the strength and effectiveness of collective bargaining, offering a glimpse into the potential for labor unions to effect real change within the workplace.

In conclusion, the ratification of this contract represents not just financial benefits for the workers but also a significant step towards reinforcing rights and restoring dignity within the workplace for Teamsters at Air Express International.
