A recent survey by TriNet, a leader in human resources solutions for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), in conjunction with Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, has provided insightful revelations about the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in SMBs. As many as 230 respondents, knowledgeable about their organization’s talent practices, participated in the survey, titled 'The New Talent Playbook for Small and Midsize Businesses in the Age of AI.' One striking finding was that a remarkable 76% of the surveyed participants predict an increase in their organization's AI usage over the next year.

However, this enthusiasm for AI adoption is accompanied by some substantial challenges. Just 19% of the respondents reported feeling adequately prepared to recruit or cultivate the necessary AI skills within their workforce. This indicates a widening capability gap that could hinder effective implementation of AI technologies in their operations.

The survey findings envision a landscape where workforce strategies must evolve in parallel to technology. 56% of respondents noted the necessity for different approaches to employee development and training due to AI's profound impact. Additionally, 49% anticipate a shift in existing roles driven by AI advancements.

Not only are SMBs preparing to navigate the technological waves of AI, but they're also addressing the human elements essential for synergy between machines and employees. The need for talent with a blend of human capabilities—such as creativity, intuition and discernment—has been highlighted by 70% of participants. Companies are beginning to realize that technology alone does not replace the need for human judgment and emotional intelligence.

The survey also disclosed that 55% of participants foresee a rising demand for AI-related skills, particularly the ability to utilize AI tools to achieve work objectives. Yet, there is apprehension over identifying which specific AI skills will be most valuable; 56% of respondents expressed uncertainty regarding the essential skills their organizations should focus on.

While many SMBs are feeling the urgency to enhance internal AI competencies, there is also a pressing concern about training existing personnel. Nearly half of the respondents (49%) indicated challenges in upskilling and reskilling staff on AI, alongside 37% who expected difficulties in assessing candidates' existing AI proficiencies.

In the face of these challenges, it is noteworthy that 79% of SMBs agree that upskilling their current workforce in light of AI developments is critical. This underscores a collective commitment among organizations to prepare their staff for future demands. The emerging emphasis on human-centered skills reflects a broader trend towards collaborative human-AI work environments, where unique human attributes complement the efficiency of AI systems, ensuring ethical and effective deployment of technologies.
