Western Reserve Academy Receives $10 Million from SharkNinja Chairman to Innovate Education

Western Reserve Academy's Vision for the Future of Education

In a groundbreaking announcement on June 5, 2026, during the Bicentennial Celebration Weekend of Western Reserve Academy (WRA), global entrepreneur CJ Xuning Wang unveiled a remarkable commitment to modernize education through innovation by pledging a substantial $10 million to the institution. This generous donation is directed towards expanding the school's innovation ecosystem and establishing a model for education that meets the needs of a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Wang, who serves as the Chairman of SharkNinja, emphasizes the necessity of evolving education to prepare students for challenges posed by artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and changing technologies. His most recent contribution, consisting of a $5 million investment, is a follow-up to a previous donation, bringing his total support for WRA to an impressive $10 million. This funding aims to enhance the school's makerspace by constructing a new 16,000-square-foot facility dedicated to innovation and creativity, aptly named the Wang Makerspace.

"Western Reserve Academy is not the finish line; it is the beginning," Wang stated during the announcement, highlighting the importance of fostering creativity and problem-solving in educational environments. The new makerspace will serve as a central hub within WRA's forthcoming Center for Arts, Innovation, and Humanity, underscoring the belief that future-ready education must meld technological competency with creativity, ethics, communication, and human-centered thinking.

Reflecting on his journey as an engineer and inventor, Wang’s vision for education is greatly influenced by his own experiences. As the founder of Joyoung, a pioneering home appliance company that created the first automatic soy milk maker, he has built a reputation for cultivating innovative consumer brands. Now, as Chairman of SharkNinja, Wang continues to influence millions of households globally through the company’s innovative products.

His previous donation has already had a transformative impact on WRA, establishing the Wang Innovation Center in 2017, which drastically transformed learning by enabling students to engage in fields such as robotics, engineering, digital fabrication, and entrepreneurship. The center became one of the school's landmark educational resources, often cited by prospective families as a defining aspect of the WRA experience.

In conjunction with this transformative investment, two additional $1 million gifts were announced, which will establish the Hannah Han Artificial Intelligence Lab and the Jeanne Donovan Fisher Theater at WRA. Moreover, support from the EE Ford Foundation will help develop a center focused on Food Innovation, Service, and Sustainability. Together, these initiatives reinforce WRA's commitment to integrating technology with human values, preparing students to make meaningful contributions to society.

Suzanne Walker Buck, the Head of School, emphasized the importance of the Bicentennial celebration in not only honoring WRA's rich history but also in envisioning the next 100 years of education. "CJ Wang’s vision challenges all of us to think bigger about how schools can cultivate innovators, creators, and leaders," she remarked. Through this investment, Wang is helping to create a model that extends beyond the walls of WRA and can inspire educational institutions nationwide.

The groundbreaking ceremony coincided with another historic moment for WRA, the dedication of a historical marker by the Ohio History Connection in honor of Frederick Douglass and his impactful 1854 address at Western Reserve College. This dual celebration encapsulates WRA's commitment to honoring its past while simultaneously investing in innovative education that will shape its future.

As Ohio's oldest boarding school, Western Reserve Academy has been a beacon of educational excellence since its founding in 1826. Throughout 2026, the institution plans to celebrate its Bicentennial with various events that reflect its commitment to education and innovation. The future looks bright for WRA, thanks to leaders like CJ Wang who are willing to invest in transformative educational experiences for the next generation.
