Uniper and AM Green Strike Landmark Agreement for Renewable Ammonia Supply
Uniper and AM Green Forge a Historic Agreement for Renewable Ammonia
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Uniper Global Commodities SE and AM Green Ammonia India Private Limited have signed a long-term agreement for the acquisition of up to 500,000 metric tons per year of renewable ammonia produced in India. This significant deal, announced on January 12, 2026, marks a pivotal step in the global shift towards sustainable energy sources.
A Milestone for Energy Transition
The agreement was ceremoniously signed in Ahmedabad, with notable figures present, including Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, and Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder and Chairman of AM Green, along with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This partnership represents the first instance where a company from India has secured such a comprehensive agreement in the renewable ammonia sector, solidifying India's role in the global energy transition framework.
Under the terms of the agreement, Uniper will receive renewable ammonia certified as Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) from AM Green's projects, with the initial shipments expected to commence by 2028 from AM Green's first plant in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, which is currently under construction. This move aligns seamlessly with India's ambitions to become a leading exporter of green hydrogen and ammonia globally and supports the National Hydrogen Mission as envisioned by Prime Minister Modi.
Enhancing Renewable Molecule Portfolios
For Uniper, this agreement is a significant advancement toward developing a diversified portfolio of low-carbon and renewable molecules aimed primarily at the European market. Renewable ammonia holds immense potential as a hydrogen carrier and a raw material, enabling the decarbonization of several industrial sectors, including chemicals, fertilizers, refining, and maritime transport. Both companies are committed to working alongside certification bodies to ensure traceability and high-integrity reporting for end-users across Europe.
Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty expressed that this partnership signals a fundamental shift in India’s contributions to the global energy transition, emphasizing the compliance of AM Green's renewable ammonia with stringent European standards through innovative clean electricity solutions.
Future Prospects and Collaborations
Michael Lewis noted that the agreement ties into Uniper’s core strategy of providing reliable access to renewable and low-carbon molecules at scale. The advantages of green ammonia, particularly in the context of reducing CO₂ emissions, position it as one of the most promising solutions for various industries. Alongside clear regulations and market mechanisms rewarding verified emissions reductions, this initiative aims to foster decarbonization processes while enhancing competitiveness in the market.
Mahesh Kolli of AM Green highlighted the importance of their alliance with Uniper by ensuring a minimal carbon footprint in hydrogen and ammonia offerings, delivering affordability for large-scale adoption and global energy systems decarbonization.
Uniper's commitment to this partnership illustrates collaborative innovation and a shared vision to capitalize on renewable technologies and solutions that are essential for sustainable energy futures.
Overview of AM Green Ammonia Projects
AM Green Ammonia is a joint venture comprising AM Green, Gentari, GIC, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). The company is diligently developing a series of green ammonia plants in India. The first facility, with a capacity of 1 million tons per annum (MTPA), is underway in Kakinada and is projected to make substantial contributions to both the local economy and environmental sustainability once it becomes operational.
Expected to generate over 600 local jobs, this plant is also estimated to prevent around 2 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually, reinforcing the commitment to climate change mitigation.
