Governor Hochul Champions Organ Donation Education in New York
New York is poised for a vital change in organ donation awareness following the signing of a new bill by Governor Kathy Hochul. The legislation, which was enacted thanks to the tireless advocacy of LiveOnNY, the region's federally designated organ procurement organization (OPO), mandates that all pre-licensing courses for prospective drivers include vital information about registering as an organ and tissue donor.
This transformative law, designated as S.2739A/A.8275A, is set to take effect on May 21, 2025, marking a significant step forward in addressing the pressing shortage of organ donors in the state. Currently, nearly 9,000 New Yorkers are on waiting lists for life-saving organ transplants, underscoring the urgency of this initiative.
At the ceremony marking this landmark achievement, prominent leaders such as Assemblymember Sam Berger and State Senator Leroy Comrie recognized LiveOnNY's central role in advocating for the legislation. The organization has long been at the forefront of efforts to improve organ donation rates, utilizing strategies like mobilizing volunteers and garnering support from influential legislators.
State Senator Leroy Comrie emphasized the importance of raising awareness about organ donation, stating, "Organ donation is critical to preserving life, and making people aware of their options is key to increasing participation. LiveOnNY was instrumental in the development and passage of this legislation, issuing a memorandum of support, providing feedback, securing co-sponsors, and mobilizing volunteers to advocate for its approval."
This move builds upon the success of Lauren's Law, which implemented similar provisions for donor registration when applying for or renewing a driver's license. Lauren, whose journey inspired the original bill, now works with LiveOnNY to continue advocating for organ donor registration.
Assemblymember Sam Berger expressed his excitement for the new law, stating, "I am thrilled to see this bill signed into law after years of LiveOnNY's hard work to make this a reality. New Yorkers now have access to comprehensive information to make informed decisions about the profound impact organ donation can have on saving lives and leaving a legacy of living on."
LiveOnNY’s extensive efforts have previously resulted in a remarkable 70% increase in organ donations over the past three years, showcasing the organization's commitment to reversing the trend of declining donor registrations significantly. Their initiatives have not only helped elevate awareness among diverse populations but also honored senior and Black organ donors, ensuring inclusivity in organ donation efforts.
Leonard Achan, President and CEO of LiveOnNY, remarked, "Incorporating this vital information into the pre-licensing course will empower individuals to make informed decisions about organ donation. We are proud to have played a key role in advocating for this transformative legislation, which will ultimately result in lives being honored and saved thanks to the generosity of New Yorkers."
The new legislation promises to create a more informed public, paving the way for enhanced participation in organ donation across New York. LiveOnNY’s achievements further establish it as a leader in promoting organ donation and ensuring every individual in its service area understands their role in potentially saving lives through the gift of donation. By recognizing and addressing the importance of organ donor education at this critical point in the licensing process, New York has taken a significant step towards resolving the ongoing organ donor crisis in the state.
